Adam shut the door after him, locking it before throwing his backpack onto the countertop of his tiny kitchen. He opened the refrigerator door, grabbing a beer. After opening the bottle and taking a swig, he took a swig before going back into the fridge to look for any viable leftover options. There was only one container left, and he took it out and set it on the counter. Realizing that he couldn't remember how long the aluminum container with the waxy cardboard top had been in there, he merely shrugged and opened the container. Adam turned away from the stench that followed, and he dared a peek out of the corner of his eye.

Various shades of white and green covered whatever was in there, making the original contents unrecognizable. Covering it back up, Adam held it at arm's length until it was in the confines of the garbage bin. Beer in hand, Adam grabbed the topmost menu out of the drawer and dialed the number, deciding on dinner as he waited for his call to be answered. Once he knew dinner was on its way, he walked over to his stereo, turned it on and pressed play.

Then, with a smirk, he turned the volume up as high as he was willing to gamble. He slumped into the nearest chair and kicked his feet up on the pair of crates that served as a coffee table. Resting his head against the back of the chair, Adam closed his eyes.

The day had been long and exhausting, but it was still a good day. All because the pretty girl on the subway had smiled at him.
