PAN was theGod of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. He wandered the hills and mountains of Arkadia playing his pan-pipes and chasing Nymphs. His unseen presence aroused feelings of panic in men passing through the remote, lonely places of the wilds.
The god was a lover of nymphs, who commonly fled from his advances.Syrinxran and was transformed into a clump of reeds, out of which the god crafted his famous pan-pipes.Pitysescaped and was turned into a mountain fir, the god's sacred tree.Ekhospurned his advances and fading away left behind only her voice to repeat forever the mountain cries of the god.
Pan was also beloved by the satyrs and spent many happy nights playing and dancing with them. However one night he couldn't bear to go for again his love had been spurned and when he requested help from Aphrodite she sneered in disgust and exclaimed" How could I burdened somebody withyou." he had ran away in shame and his deep in the woods where he was now hiding up in the branches of a fir tree, his sacred tree. His pipe playing was soft and sweet and he heard the oncoming footsteps if a young woman."Why what is that sounds that sweet playing. O it has stopped why even the great musicians on Olympus my own brother Apollo never had played such sweet music as to entertain me when I hunt. Is that you. O come satyr be down and play again and I will tell your god pan of your prowess."She looked at his shaggy legs and curving horns and smiled as e climbed clumsily down."O lady Artemis. Had I known I would not have shocked you. Thank you it pleases me to have my music praised as so but please it is I the god Pan."
Artemis looked at him shocked" Are you not on Olympusreadying for the feast?" Pan smiled sadly."I cannot go, I willnot go I will not offend the eyes of the maidens with the sight of me nor have my hairy legs and curbing horns of which I was so proud scorned and jokedat. No I cannot go" With this he paused at the sad smile of his Heroine the maiden huntress she did not no nor could he tell her for she despised men and their weakness and she would never be near him again.
Noticing his sadness Artemis pleaded with him."O fine satyr please do tell me what has occurred who has placed the beauty of your shining horns and handsome hindquarters at a joke? Tell me and I shall strike them down for none has been so kind nor sweet to play and sing for the satyrs as you and none has been such a friend to my huntress maidens as you tell me and is shall strike them down." she exclaimed in rage. looked down sadly" you cannot for she is of Olympus and half sister to you."Sobbing pan explained everything to the young maiden huntress.;
She lifted him to his feet after his tale and walked him to his forest home" It is true what you say I cannot inter fear but I can comfort my favourite satyr ad god of the wilds. Can I not?"At the favourite satyr comment Pan's heart leapt for joy perhaps she did not think of him as he thought of her but she did recognise him and call him a friend. They entered Pans small forest home and they ate the meagre supplies he had let before they both drunk on emotion entered the bedroom where they slept head on shoulder to the morning and when they awoke the young goddess did not strike him down but instead kissed himsoftly on the cheek and then the lips" I wish to see you again. Don't give up on love my sweet satyr."She whispered leaving.
