Sunset

"You can't carry me any farther, you know," if it wasn't for the ragged gasps and exhausted sigh, that familiar voice would have sounded almost amused—teasing, like it always had been—before this war.

"Shut the hell up," is the predictable retort, and there's a weak chuckle in response as the sun paints them both red, and both look up automatically, staring at the fading sunlight as it disappears behind the countless hills and valleys that separate them from anywhere.

There's another sigh—this time almost impatient. "Put me down," the blond orders, tapping lightly at his companion's chest; the only place his weak hands can reach now. "We can't go any farther,"

"Shut up," snarls the man in the shattered remains of a soldier's armor, forcefully taking another step, down toward the empty valley.

"Put me down, Kurogane," There's no answer this time, so Fai tries struggling and twisting out of his grip, trying to reach the ground.

"Are you trying to kill yourself?" snaps the dark-haired man, arms tightening around the other's legs.

"You can't be suicidal if you're already dying," says the blond matter-of-factly, almost confidently. "Put me down, please, Kurogane,"

"We can't stop now, we're almost there," comes the stubborn reply.

"We're not almost anywhere. Put me down," to understate these words, there's what obviously means to be a sharp blow but ends up more like a light tap to Kurogane's temple, and there's a long sigh.

There's nowhere left to run, after all.

When they're both lying and seated comfortably on the sloping valley, staring up at the last rays of sun disappearing behind the clouds, battered hands intertwined, there's a sound—just a shout, far off in the distance.

"We have to move,"

Blond threads shake in denial. "I can't go any farther,"

"Fai,"

There's a moment—bloody fingers tightening around bruised ones, and a heartbeat of lips pressing against lips before there's another shout—closer, now. They're coming for them.

The sunset flickers and dies, darkness moving to replace it.

"You have to go," his hands are shaking as he pulls away. "You'll never get far enough, carrying me."

"I'm not going anywhere."

He doesn't.

Fin.

a/n: That was supposed to be AU—I tried to avoid using names as much as possible, I'm sorry if it got confusing. This is my first KuroFai—which might explain the (ridiculous amount of) OOCness.
