The Emerald City – Chapter 1

Mission Briefing

Jack ducked through the low door, stepping into a room that was illuminated with only a single incandescent light bulb. Interesting piece of technology, that light bulb; so primitive.

"Agent Jonathan Price," a deep voice reverberated out of the shadows. Jack stood at attention. No one knew the identity of the Oracle, the man in charge of the Time Agency; no one had even tried to find out since Jack had joined six years ago. "Your next mission is in Seattle, Washington, Earth. Early 21st century. There is a temporal disturbance somewhere in the city. Location unknown."

"Sounds wet," Jack remarked with a grin.

The Oracle ignored his comment. "For this mission, you will assume the alias of Captain Jack Harkness, a Torchwood Agent of the era with whom you share an uncanny resemblance." A holoimage appeared in front of Jack; a man perhaps a few years older than himself, who wore a WWII-style greatcoat. If Jack didn't know better, he'd swear the man was him. He came complete with the debonair grin and sparkling eyes Jack prided so much in himself.

"Torchwood will kill me if they find out I'm impersonating one of their Agents," Jack said; not worried, just stating a fact. After all, Torchwood didn't stand a chance of catching him.

"We… believe that Captain Harkness is complicit to our goals," the Oracle answered.

"You believe?" Jack echoed, suddenly not so sure about this mission.

"One more thing," the Oracle continued. "You will have a partner for this mission."

"Oh, God, no," Jack groaned. There was no way he was going to put up with Hart for another whole mission. He'd just about killed the infuriating man last time.

The door behind him creaked open, and Jack turned to face his new partner. As partners went, she wasn't half bad. She had a figure that swung and bounced with each step, a head full of crazy, curly blonde hair, and a cheeky grin plastered across her face.

"Doctor River Song," she said, sticking a well-manicured hand out for him to shake. "Archeology."
