He gapes. Byakuya is normally too prim and standing too much on his dignity to indulge in such a foolish, stupefied expression, but this time he can't help it. He gapes, and prays Kenpachi will never find out how dumbstruck he was—that infuriating man would never let him live it down.
Byakuya has of course been to the human world before; several times, in fact. But this, really is the first time he's ever paid anything remotely resembling attention to his surroundings before, not to mention it's probably the only time he's ever been here in broad daylight. To drink in the human world when the sun's shining, to not have to focus on a mission…
This…
This is just too much.
Byakuya feels a small hand tug on his wrist, and when he looks to his left Rukia's staring up at him, a look on her face that was clearly trying not to display amusement. Instead, Rukia attempts to project a kindly expression on to her face—and fails, miserably. For now, Byakuya decides to put up with it. He's tolerated worse.
"Niisama?" Rukia asks in a whisper. "Are you alright?"
He nods a little numbly. "Yes, Rukia."
Rukia's small smile now becomes slightly openly amused—at least she's being honest about it. "It takes a little getting used to."
Byakuya snorts indelicately and surveys the sight before him—pavement in sidewalks and roads, with street lamps and cars passing by at breakneck speeds, never noticing them. A bizarre, alien place of bright, artificial colors and the acrid smell of pollution everywhere.
"Obviously."
