It was Narcissa's first ball. Well, not necessarily her first ball, but the first ball she was able to attend without having to sit in the nursery with her cousins Sirius and Regulus. So, naturally, she was dressed to kill. Or at least, she was dressed to look thirteen instead of her actual eleven.
Her mother had given her permission to go on the annual shopping trip with her older sisters that year and even let her pick out any dress she wanted. Okay, so not the actual dress she wanted because it was so low cut that her non-existing breasts would even be popping out and, as her sister Andromeda had said, it was "...the ugliest shade of green ever. It looks like the color of puke."
So instead of getting the dress she really wanted, but then didn't because it was her first ball and she had to look gorgeous, Narcissa decided on an ice blue satin gown complete with laced bodice and quarter-length sleeves. Even Bellatrix had gushed over how beautiful the dress was and Bella never gushed about anything.
She'd gotten dressed quickly and wouldn't stop badgering Bellatrix and Andromeda to do her hair and makeup until they finally gave in. They didn't want to admit it at first, but both of had them loved dolling her up for her first Fall Ball. Bella even laughed when Andromeda accidentally blew the hair spray right in her face.
When the three of them had finally finished dressing and making themselves over, they met their parents in the foyer and began greeting their guests as a family. Narcissa was a bit disappointed when her cousins showed up and Sirius was also dressed for the event. He looked handsome in his little tuxedo though, which was okay because she knew they would be forced to be dancing partners all night long anyway.
The mansion quickly began filling with people when the Lestranges came and their eldest son Rodolphus asked if he could have the first dance with Bella. Her parents then excused Bellatrix from greeting duty and it was left to the four of them. But only moments later, the Rosiers arrived and Evan whisked Andromeda off as well.
It was just her parents and her then and again she felt a little left out. Before, her sisters attended the balls and she didn't. Now, they had dates and all she had was Sirius. Why did she have to be the youngest?
With a sigh, she'd cocked her head upward to ask her mother if she could be excused. But just before the words left her mouth the door opened and the Malfoy's were announced. Knowing that her parents would never let her leave before greeting a new arrival she narrowed her eyes and looked to the short hallway leading from the front door.
And it was then that Narcissa first laid eyes on the man she was to spend the rest of her life with. She quite literally held her breath as the Malfoy's sashayed up to her parents. They exchanged pleasantries, but Narcissa was too busy drinking in the youngest Malfoy to pay much attention.
"My lady," Lucius said smoothly, his hand reaching out to take Narcissa's.
"Sir," a small smile crept onto her face as she reached out to place her hand in his. She gasped softly as he bowed, softly twisted her hand until it was facing upwards, and brushed his lips against her palm.
It only lasted a second and before she was ready, he was pulling away from her. But, she thought, he held onto her hand a little longer than necessary. He grinned at her and then turned to follow his parents into the ballroom.
For some reason, she didn't know why, she looked up at her mother and said softly, "Mama, I'm going to spend the rest of my life with that boy."
The End
