The New Duck
Long car rides always relaxed me. Something about them made me calm, even in the worst of situations. This ride was different though. I felt tired, depressed, and yet happy at the same time.
My mother can't handle me anymore. Today she is dropping me at my Uncle Gordon's house so that I can live with him. She claims this will be better for me, to get my mind off of my father's death, but I highly doubt it. The only reason I agreed to go was so that I could spend time with Gordon and get to know the infamous Ducks.
The District 5 Mighty Ducks were a group of kids that made headlines all last year for being great hockey players. My uncle just happened to be their coach.
Mom and I arrived after a very silent ride. My uncle ran outside when he saw the car pull up. I got out of the car and practically jumped into his arms.
"Hey Uncle!"
"Em! How are you sweetie?"
"Could be better. Uh, which room is going to be mine so I can out my stuff there."
"Top floor, third door on you right."
I grabbed my bags out of the trunk of the car and walked towards Uncle Gordon's amazing house. It was an old Victorian House. Three floors, two kitchens, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, and three acres of land in the backyard. Quickly I ran up the stairs and dropped my bags at the room I was assigned. I found it to be already designed.
The room was a medium light blue with green, white, and brown polka dots. The bed spread matched the walls and there was a large green couch up against the wall next to the entrance to my own personal balcony. The curtains were blue and white and I had a large brown desk with a desktop computer already hooked up and a desk filled with stuff I would need such as notebooks, pens, and pencils. I was astonished at how beautiful the room was. I went to the balcony and could hear the conversation my mother and uncle were having.
"Can you believe her, she didn't even say goodbye to me!" My mother said angrily, like she actually expected me to say goodbye.
"You know Carol, if I were her I wouldn't have said goodbye either. How can you just give up on your own daughter?"
"You have no idea what she is putting me through Gordon. I can't take it anymore. With Luke gone I can't control her. She doesn't want to talk, she leaves the house at random and God only knows what she's doing!"
"Oh please. Give her the benefit of the doubt, Emma is a good kid with a good head on your shoulders. Stop being so damn self absorbed and think about your daughter who you are leaving!"
"I have, that's why she is with you now. It'll be better for her here."
"Yeah, it will, because I don't pity her. I am going to actually help her out."
"Good Luck Gordon. Have her call me when she gets settled in."
"Only if she wants to."
"Fine. I'll be seeing you then, I guess."
"Yeah, bye Carol."
I heard my mother's car pull away and uncle come back into the house. I heard him run up the stairs and turned around to see him at my doorway.
"You like it?" He asked hopeful.
"Are you kidding? I love it! How did you get it to look so perfect?"
"Well my girlfriend Casey and her son Charlie helped out a lot. You are going to meet them tonight, along with the rest of the Ducks."
"Okay, why are they coming?"
"Just for a little beginning of summer party. By the way could you help me get ready for it, I have to go buy some more snacks and I need you to put some decorations up."
"No problem. I'll just unpack my things real quick and be right down."
He smiled at me then walked down the stairs. I looked around my room and just felt relief wash over me, maybe my mom was right, living with Uncle Gordon might not be that bad.
