Disclaimer: Gundam Wing isn't mine
Author's Note: I missed Gundam Wing. Guh...Setsuna and Marina are like a watered-down version of Heero and Relena. I want my OTP back! Just something mildly poetic to sharpen my claws while I study for midterms.
Standing a Chance
by mistress amethyst une
I don't crave the feel of your hand on mine...
The vase fell to the marble floor, shattering into thousands of pieces. The white roses it once cradled swam in spilled water and glass shards.
"I don't love you," she uttered. Her fists were clenched, and she shook from the effort of keeping her tears at bay.
Don't or won't, Relena? There's a difference.
"I don't understand," he uttered, frozen at her sudden change of heart.
"W-we..."
She was stuttering. The former queen of the world was stuttering as her universe crumbled around her.
"Tell me again," he stated in as steady a tone as he could. "Tell me again and I'll go."
She swallowed, finding the strength to say the abominable.
"I don't love you," she choked out as tears fled down her face.
You won't love him, then?
He turned and left, trampling the roses underfoot as he walked out the door.
...because my hand belongs in someone else's.
She felt Heero's presence behind her. He would not touch her, could not bring himself close. She'd hurt him, tried to replace him...
"If you cared for him, you shouldn't have let him go," he told her.
She couldn't speak.
"You told him you loved him," he continued.
She wanted to tell him something...but how could she? Somehow, she'd been rendered mute.
I didn't see his eyes...
"I love you," she told the man who held her as she danced, her cheek against his, her eyes seeing nothing but Heero Yuy's pained glare as he read her lips. It was then that she knew her words were not meant for the creature that promptly dipped her and stole a kiss, further paining the true object of her affection.
The things we do and say for a little warmth now and again. Such stupid things...
...I only saw your pain as you watched me give away what was rightfully yours.
"So fickle, Relena," he ranted, bitterness sharpening his tone. "I almost felt sorry for that one."
That was the last straw...
"Why is this any of your business?"
Her query was frigid, her back remained turned. He took a step back and prepared to leave.
"You know why I turn them down, Heero."
He froze in his tracks.
"I do."
"So...why didn't you ever do anything about it?"
"Would you have let me?"
She finally turned, her blue eyes glistening with beads of saltwater.
"Answer me!" she pleaded. "Why?"
He hated seeing her cry...
"Because they were men who suited you, men who wouldn't make people think less of you, men who would've loved you if given the chance..."
...but couldn't help being her misery.
She fell to her knees.
"The chance was always yours alone, Heero. Only you ever stood a chance."
