"Stop trying to cover your accent, honey."
"But it's awful—"
"No, it isn't, it's cute!"
I looked over at my best friend, Sookie Stackhouse, and couldn't help but smile cheekily at her. She returned it and embraced me before going back to work. She was working as a waitress at Merlotte's Bar & Grill and I was only waiting for her shift to end so we could hang out. It had been a few weeks since we last saw each other – mostly because I was busy with moving in to my new apartment – and we had decided yesterday that we could go to her place, probably just talking and watching a movie; the usual, so to speak.
After a few minutes, I grew bored, so I looked around. The townspeople of Bon Temps were chatting loudly, the most of them probably drunk. But there was a man that caught my attention. He was sitting alone, hunched over, seeming to be in deep thoughts. He had pale skin; almost glowing, and dark, wavy hair, reaching down to his shoulders.
I had this weird feeling in my stomach. It was something wrong with that man.
Then it hit me. He was a vampire.
But a vampire, in Bon Temps? Most unlikely. But he wasn't eating anything, either… or he just wasn't hungry, of course. It was a possibility. Or he didn't eat because he don't, because he's a vampire and drink blood.
I had to tell Sookie.
When I finally saw her walking out of the counter, I waved with my hand. She raised her eyebrows, but then walked over to me, her blonde ponytail bouncing behind her back. "What is it, honey?" she asked and smiled. She was that kind of person that always was happy and lit up the whole room with her presence.
"Uh, Sook, do you see that man over there—no, there—yeah, yeah, him. I think… I think he's a vampire", I mumbled, frowning. Her blue eyes widened and she let out a gasp, but I quickly shushed her. "Don't make him notice you, wouldn't want him to eat us both!"
"But here? I don't understand…"
"Don't you sense something off about him, too? Can you use your Jedi mind tricks on him, or something?"
Sookie sighed, putting her hands on her hips. "You're really obsessed with that movie, aren't you?"
"No, I'm not, just a dedicated fan—but seriously, do you…?"
After one minute or two, she nodded. She looked at me, a big smile on her lips. "Yes! I-I can't read his… Wow. But it's probably because he's dead meat, but… what a relief. I should take his order right away!"
"No! Are you out of your mind? He's a vampire, Sookie, he sucks blood—he-he's Dracula!"
"You know they think I'm crazy, so it doesn't matter", she said, taking out her notebook, tapping her pen impatiently at it. "And he isn't Dracula, silly! You way watch too much movies."
"But it's a classic—"
"See you later, honey!"
I leaned back in my chair, letting out a big sigh as I watched my best friend almost waltzing over to that vampires table. Did she have a death wish? Sometimes I just couldn't understand her. It was a stupid idea to tell her about and I soon immediately noticed that the townspeople were looking at them both. They knew what he was by now and Sookie was completely mesmerized by the man… was he doing something to her, or was she already in love?
Well, it didn't matter. I just didn't like it. And, as I saw her boss, Sam Merlotte, the owner of the bar – I knew that I he had the same opinion as me.
