Tell me a story

Alright then, so, now I've got another short one, sorry, I just really like writing one-shots… Just a warning, it's kind of angsty and I've "named" Katniss's daughter Olivia and Finnick and Annie's son Hydro.

Disclaimer: I do not own the hunger games

Katniss's daughter stared up at her mother as she tucked her in slowly, "Mom."

Katniss finished tucking her daughter in and asked, "Yes sweetie?"

The little girl's wide gray eyes met her mother's, "Tell me a story."

Katniss sat down next to her daughter, brushing a hand through her hair, "What do you want to hear about, Olivia? Dandelion?"

The blonde cat jumped up onto Olivia's bed at the sound of his name; meowing and blinking his large blue eyes, making the six year old smile as she pet him. She turned to her mom, still running her hands through the cat's fur, "No mom. I want to hear something else."

Katniss sighed, "Alright, what do you want to hear about?"

"I want to hear a story I haven't heard yet," Olivia said softly, "The ones I haven't heard bore me."

A story, a story that she hasn't heard… "Do you want it to be a happy story?"

"No," Olivia said, surprising her mother, "I want it to be a real story. Not all real stories have happy endings. That's what cousin Hydro says."

"A real story…"

But there are so many… I-I can't scare her with the Hunger Games… but…

Katniss brushed her daughter's hair back, "Sometimes people leave us and they never come back. We don't see them again for our life time."

"Like Hydro's daddy," Olivia asked softly.

Katniss paused for a moment. Finnick… "Yes sweetie, exactly like that."

"Where do they go," Olivia asked innocently.

Katniss sighed, closing her eyes, her lost friends passing behind them as she sat there, holding her daughter's hand as she said gently, "They go somewhere special. They go somewhere, somewhere we can't reach until fate tells us it's time to join them."

Olivia's ash gray eyes were filled with curiosity, "Is it a nice place?"

Katniss nodded, trying to stop herself from crying and control her voice from trembling, "Yes I think so. It would be a very nice place."

Olivia turned away for a moment, deep in thought before returning to question her mother as she ran her fingers through the now sleeping cat's fur, "Do they-"

She thought for another moment, trying not to upset her mom, "Don't they miss us?"

Katniss felt her voice break halfway through her statement, "Y-yes… But not as much as we miss them."

Olivia frowned and asked softly, "Mommy, why are you crying?"

"No matter what, they're still here with us," Katniss whispered, her voice trembling as tears started in her eyes, "always," she pointed delicately to her daughter's chest, "Right here."

"In my heart?"

"Y-yes sweetie," Katniss whispered, ignoring the tears rolling down her cheeks, "Y-your heart."

Katniss slowly turned off the light, and left her daughter to sleep. Afterwards she walked into the room next door, her room quietly, trying to not disturb her husband. She sat down on the bed slowly, unfortunately, that movement caused Peeta to stir and sit up, "Katniss?"

She turned to him slowly, and he saw she was crying, "Katniss…"

He hugged her close and she cried quietly into his chest for a few minutes, "I lost them Peeta… I lost them all."

"You didn't lose everyone," he said, pushing her back slowly and rubbing away her tears, "You still have me and you always will."

He kissed her, watching her smile, and then laid back down slowly, "Get some sleep. The kids have school tomorrow."

She smiled and snuggled her head into his chest, letting her eyes close, "Thank you…"

The End

Sorry that was short. I just like writing one-shots I guess.
