"Are
you all set?" Troy's mom asked, glancing at the duffle bag
sitting next to his feet. Troy shoved his hands in his pockets and
rocked back and forth on his heels.
"Yup," he said simply. Mrs. Bolton looked over his shoulder and took in the view of her son's new home court.
He was ready for this... even if she wasn't.
Turning to her husband, Mrs. Bolton took a deep breath and held her arms out. Troy pulled his hands from his pockets and stepped into his mother's hug.
"I love you, Troy," she whispered, kissing his forehead lightly.

Jack
Bolton watched his wife turn into a blubbering mess and he refused to
crack. It wasn't attractive and he had a reputation. He was the tough
basketball star-turned-coach who just happened to be letting his son
walk off to his own future.
And he didn't like it.
Jack knew that Troy would be fine, of course. He was raised right, had good friends and was a great kid. He'd have the entire school charmed before the start of class on Monday.
Once his wife let go, Jack pulled Troy into a hug.
"Please don't kiss me," Troy begged him.

Troy
finally managed to pull away from his dad and gave his mom another
hug, just to humor her. "Call when you get home," he
requested, giving her a quick peck on the cheek. Pulling back, Troy
reached for his last bag and puffed his cheeks into a
smile.
Throwing up a hand, he waved to them and moved back. A few steps away, Troy turned on a heel and walked toward the dorm. Really, he didn't want to see them seeing him panic.
Of course, he'd tell Chad that it was a piece of cake to see them off.
Coach

Jack
reached for his wife's arm and pulled her to him as Troy turned. She
obviously wasn't handling the goodbye well. 'Women,'
he thought with a sigh. As Troy moved farther away, Jack realized
that it was really happening.
When had Troy grown up? Just a few months ago, he was graduating from East High and announcing to the world he had chosen basketball and theater. Jack never imagined that path for Troy. He doubted anyone did.
Jack blinked as his wife squeezed him a little tighter and he pressed a kiss to her lips. "Let's go home," he sighed.
