Destiny's Choice

No man, no matter how great can ever choose his destiny. And when his fate is decided, no matter how powerful he is, he can't escape from it.

Merlin, the greatest sorcerer to ever walk the Earth's surface, the young warlock whose destiny was far more important and filled with dangers than any other she had casted, was her best ward. She had spindled and played with his future, and it involved great many obstacles but in the end it always led to the same future. Every decision he made, every action of his – she would make sure that it would end in the same manner.

He was Arthur's protector.

He was going to unite the land of Albion.

He would remain by the King's side.

He would bring back magic in Camelot.

He would fulfil his destiny.

That was what Merlin was supposed to do. And that was what he would. Destiny was going to make sure that none hindered her plans. She was absolutely resolute on that.

Almost as if Merlin knew about all her and wanted to mock her, he met the cursed girl. Freya. Destiny didn't understand what he saw in her, but Merlin very fast fell for her. She had hoped that his feelings wouldn't strengthen, but they did in such a short span of time that it was unbelievable.

Destiny tried to side with lovers whenever she could. And if it hadn't been for his original destiny, she would have helped him. Despite her misgivings about Freya, they were perfect for each other. Merlin was the strongest sorcerer to have ever been born, even if no one knew it. He would need someone extraordinary to complete him, and she had begun to see that Freya was special.

But Freya, unfortunately, was not Arthur. Merlin wanted to run away, and fail his destiny. And Destiny, the mundane world's powerful keeper, couldn't bear to see that happen. It was seldom that the people she set on their path were misled. She couldn't let that happen.

As the threads of their actions unraveled, Destiny saw their future. Merlin was going to thwart from his original path, and in turn he was going to end the world he knew sooner than she had it planned for him. She could see the chaos, the destruction, and the deaths. It was unbearable.

There was only one thing left to do . . . She visited Freya. She knew that despite the monster in her, the girl was quite kind and righteous. She would see sense. And if she didn't, there were always other ways to persuade her.

Destiny could see the doubt in the girl, and she worked with it. The hidden doubt grew in Freya's heart until it took over her heart. Merlin was ready to lead a life with her, but Freya, she had other plans.

Once again, the threads changed. It was pitiful to watch. The course of events occurred and subsided quickly. Freya was soon dead. It was almost ironic that it was Arthur's spear that killed her. Destiny feared Merlin's reaction to that – but the boy was too great to hold a grudge against Arthur. Her doubts settled when Merlin's future changed, when his and Arthur's threads were linked again.

Now that the future was back to what it was, there were still some things that needed to be decided. For Merlin to love, the girl had to be unique. She was.

Destiny wasn't heartless . . . not completely, anyway.

Freya was dead, but she would live. She would play a part in Merlin's future once more. She would be there when he would need help most. And so, the Lady of the Lake was born.
