He Lied
A House Fanfic.
Sequel of sorts to She Lied.
It was almost midnight when Robert Chase's cell phone rang. He almost didn't hear it.
He fumbled for the lamp cord, and then nearly dropped the phone on the floor in his haste to answer.
"Hello?" His words were slurred with sleep.
"Hi Chase." Immediately he sat up in bed at the sound of her voice after weeks and weeks of nothing. She sounded good.
"Hey. Where are you calling from?"
"A hotel."
"In what city?"
He could hear her chuckle on the other end.
"A big one. How have you been?"
Chase rubbed his cheek with his hand and attempted to rouse himself to full alertness.
"Good. You know. Alright. You?"
There was rustling from her end before she answered.
"Alright. I heard you hired a new doctor. What's she like?"
Chase pictured Masters in head.
"Not you."
Another haunting laugh.
"Not what I asked."
Silence. Chase wanted to ask her everything. Where was she? Why did she leave? Why had she come to him? How could she go? But the words would not fall from the tip of his tongue.
"Chase?"
"Hmm?"
"I miss it."
"What?"
"Everything. Everyone. Even House."
"So come back."
More rustling.
"I can't. Not yet."
"Why-"
"Look, just… I just wanted to ask you… How everyone was." But the words echoed back to him: do you miss me?
"They're good. We're hanging in there, you know." No.
"Right."
"Yeah."
"Goodbye, Chase."
"Bye Thirteen."
Then the click as she hung up the phone. Chase turned out the light and lay back down. But he couldn't go back to sleep. Her face swam in his mind's eye. He pushed the sides of the pillow up around his head, covering his ears.
Yes. I miss you. I want you to come back. We're falling apart. It will never be the same. Come back to me.
But Robert Chase was a human being. And lying comes naturally.
A/N: It's meant to be a sequel to She Lied. It is a bit short, and I'm not super happy with the way it turned out, but for now I'll post it. A reviewer asked me if I would write a fic where Thirteen comes back. I may do that, but I sort of wanted to wait and see how the show producers did it, so that I could possibly stay slightly in canon.
Anyway, I hope you liked it. Please leave a review and let me know!
