Recuperation

Leia Organa Solo lay in a bed in the recuperating room of the Medical Center. Life was a mess. Her and her husband, Han, had been estranged for months and then suddenly thrown back together in a reunion that didn't play itself out right. She wanted to apologize to Han for all the things she said and did but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She needed to know if Han was ready to start family life all over again.

All over again, those three simple words held great meaning over Leia's heart. Chewbacca was dead. It was something she never thought she would have to deal with. She had always figured that Chewie would out live them all. He had died a tragic death and his death sent Han reeling away from his life and his family.

The door whooshed open and Leia turned as Han entered. "How are you feeling?" he asked quietly.

"I'm okay." Came her only reply. What was she supposed to say? She hadn't seen him since just after she was attacked. Even then his approach was clumsy. "Look Han-"

"No, Sweetheart, before anything else is said I have something that I really need to say."

Leia's eyes searched out his. "What is it?"

"I- After Chewie's death I turned away from you and from our family. That was something I never should have done. I took my grief way out and beyond. You were all grieving too and I just ignored my family."

"Han-"

"No, Leia please just listen." He said. She gave him a nod and continued, "I just- I don't know. I guess I just wasn't ready to face life without Chewie. I'm so sorry for what I did to and to the kids."

Leia smiled weakly, "I'm sorry too. I turned away when you needed me most. I left you grieving and home while I rushed off to try to save the galaxy again. I should have stayed."

Han shook his head, "Leia no. You did what you needed to do. The Senate wouldn't listen and if it weren't for you we would be in worse shape than we already are. You tried to help me but I just turned away. I became a drunk and I-"

Leia's eyes widened and what he might be implying, "You didn't." she whispered. She felt like someone stabbed a knife in her chest.

Han shook his head, "No I didn't." he reassured her. "I just thought about the good old days when I didn't have a family life. It was almost as if I was wishing that I never married you or the kids were born."

Leia's eyes filled with sympathy but her heart turned as cold as ice. "Han I'm tired. I think I should get some rest."

"Leia I just came to say that I have rediscovered all the reasons. "

"Reasons? What?"

"What I knew before, that I couldn't live without you. I lost Chewie and that tore me to pieces but losing you would shatter me. I know we didn't say it before but I love you. I have always loved you. Your strong and beautiful, caring and you have a good heart. If you never forgive me I understand. If you never give me a chance to make it up to you I-"

"Han," Leia interrupted.

"What?" He asked.

She smiled, "Shut up." And she kissed him. She loved him so much and losing him would shatter her, just as it would him. Fate and thrown them together, apart, and together again.

"I Love you." He said, once they broke apart.

Leia smiled, "I Know."
