I don't think I can even begin to apologize.

She hammered the 'backspace' key on her laptop. Composing a letter using a word processor first seemed easier. The kinks, and let's be honest, spelling can be worked out before touching pen to paper.

It also keeps her from tearing up her stationary.

She sighed, staring blankly at the screen. She's torn up plenty of stationary this year.

The little blinking cursor mocked her.

Argh.

What can I say? There is no way to…

The backspace key suffered again. How many times has she tried to write this letter? She stopped counting somewhere in the high twenties.

She looked away from the nearly blank screen surveying her room. What was left of it that is. Her mother had bought some storage tubs for the move. Rensselear hall was waiting.

My Grandfather. Sofu. Before he passed he told me about the war, about the… camps.

When I was ready he told me everything I could ever care to know about being persecuted for just 'being different.'

I'm sorry.

When you needed me most, I failed you.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw the small teddy bear; a cheap midway prize that for just one night meant the world to her. It was on the floor of her closet, recently unearthed. She picked it up and smiled at it.

'Shades' she had called it. The smile fell.

There was a knock at the door.

"Sweetie?" Her mother opened the door cautiously.

"Hi mom. I'm almost ready." She hugged her mother tight.

"Don't worry." Her mother said in her wonderfully soothing 'everything is going to be alright' voice. "We're going to keep your room just as you left it. Well. Maybe a bit neater. You can come home every weekend."

"Thanks…" She hugged tighter.

"We're so proud of you. Dad just can't wait to drive down for that first game. He's already got a 'Go Pride' t- shirt."

"Go Pride." She repeated. He mother kissed her softly on the forehead.

"Wash up. It's your last family dinner and I'm trying my hardest not to cry."

"I'll be right down." She said as her mother left.

"You are going to love Hofstra!" Her mother called from down the hall.

She took a deep breath and looked down. She was still holding shades. Another brief smile crossed her lips while placing him in one of the crates.

Blink. Blink. Blink. Blink. The cursor mocked her. She sat at her desk, re-read what was there, sighed, and clicked the X.

A dialog box opened asking if she wanted to save the changes made to document 1.

She clicked 'don't save.' Another letter unsent.

The Dark Side of Love.
