prologue
Jayden Jones stared glassy-eyed at her bedroom wall, her legs crossed and her arms spaghetti at her sides. The front of her mind was silent, but her subconscious was screaming.
"This'll be good for you, Jay," her mom was saying, packing Jayden's things frantically. "I think you need some space from the people here."
As her mom continued to rant about how 'great' it was that she was moving in with her uncle, Jayden turned on the radio next to her and cranked the volume. Her eyes remained on the wall as a song that she couldn't care less about sang over her mother's voice.
Maybe she could run away, that would be good. Or, maybe if she tried hard enough, she could learn to fly and fly away to space. Though, would that still be considered running away? No, that would be considered awesome. But, yeah, it would be considered running away. Probably.
Suddenly, the music stopped. Jayden blinked and furrowed her eyebrows at how close her mom's fuming face was to hers. How long had she zoned out?
"Hey, I'm doing this for your own good!" her mom barked, pointing an angry finger at Jayden. "It would be nice if you'd show some gratitude once in a while."
Jayden pursed her lips, and opened her mouth to say something, but was interrupted.
"Mom, it's okay. Calm down."
Jayden turned toward the door of her now-barren room and saw her twin sister, Jordan. Her curly blonde hair was up in a messy bun, and she looked absolutely 'lovely' in her summer dress that Jayden was sure that she just threw on.
Self-consciously, Jayden looked down at her black boxers and tank top. She hadn't brushed her hair in days.
"Thank you, Jordan, dear," her mom said, walking up to Jordan and giving her a hug which she graciously returned. When they pulled apart, her mom looked at her and said, "Can you do me a favor and get your sister to do something other than stare at a wall? I've tried everything."
"Will, do, mom."
Will do, mom, Jayden mocked in her head, scowling.
Jordan got Jayden to look away from the wall, but her mind stayed glued to what it had been stuck in all day: Beacon Hills is going to suck absolute ass.
