Chapter 1: A Peculiar Search

Disclaimer: I own nothing but my OC.

Magnolia pulled herself up the cliff face before stopping to catch her breath. She could see the edge of the ledge from where she was currently perched. In all actuality, it wasn't much further from her little edge. After a moment, she forced herself to continue the ascent. Her hard work finally paid off as she finally hoists herself up and over the side.

Rolling onto her back, Magnolia's eyes shut as she grins hugely. She had been searching for the Cairnholm loop for a while and she was so close now. Sitting up, she finally makes her way into town. Before she was going anywhere, she wanted to make herself at least slightly presentable.

It didn't take her long to find the path that would take her a nearby village. As she walked along the worn, brown path she stumbles across a group of villagers harassing a teenage boy. Curious, she walks over to investigate.

When she was close enough, she could overhear one of them shouting, "This is th' lest time you'll be stealing fae us, laddie"

Pulling out a knife, another sneers, "Whin we're thro' wi' ye this wull be th' lest time ye dae anythin'!"

At this point, the boy was backing up nervously. Magnolia couldn't see exactly what was going on, but she did see him holding his arms up in surrender as he promises, "It wasn't me, I swear."

Raising his eyebrows suspiciously, the first farmer asks, "Then whit wur ye daein' oan oor farm?"

"Research! That's all!" the boy promises as he holds up a large, leather-bound notebook.

Snatching it from him, the second farmer simply throws it over his shoulder before dangerously whispering, "A'm daein' some research tae. Whit skinny-malinky wee theives keek lik' whin cut open."

With that, the two men converge on him. As the knife came down on the boy, he threw his hands up to shield himself. However, the cut never came. Opening his eyes, he was surprised to see his would-be-attackers were no longer aiming to hurt him.

When she saw the man drive the knife down, Magnolia rushes over to him and wraps her fingers around his bicep before forcing the knife into his friend's arm. When the man lets go of the knife handle, Magnolia kicks her foot into the back of his knee, instantly downing him.

Leaving both men on the ground, Magnolia turns to the boy then.

Realizing he was no longer being attacked, he slowly lets his guard down as Magnolia approaches. "I guess I should thank you for saving my life," he says, tipping his hat to her.

As he does so, Magnolia freezes in her tracks. Upon the removal of the hat, it was clear that there was nothing under the boy's head. It was as though the hat had been hovering there all along. She takes a cautious step backward, only to slip on one of the bodies of the downed townspeople.

"Here let me help," the boy offers, rushing forward.

Magnolia looked from the cuff of the brown jacket up to the floating cap then back down again. She obviously couldn't get up on her own, much less make it back to the cliff she was considering throwing herself off of to see if she was dreaming or not. The invisible boy also seemed genuinely concerned for her and wanted to help. If he wanted to attack her, he would have done so already. Cautiously she raised her left hand out of the mud, supporting her weight with her right. She kept slowly reaching forward for the sleeve since she couldn't see anything else and froze when her fingertips touched skin. Warily, she traced his fingers with her own, marveling at how he was so there when her eyes were telling her he wasn't.

When her hand was fully in his, he tightened his grip and pulled her up to where he stood on much more level ground. The second she put any weight on her foot she stumbled forward in agony. The boy quickly caught her as she toppled toward his chest.

"It's okay, I've got you," he promises as he steadies her, helping her get her balance back. She stood only on her good foot, the other leg bent at the knee, as the invisible boy held her tightly in his arms to keep her from falling. There was an uncomfortable silence before the boy spoke again.

"My name's Millard," he says in a way of introducing himself.

"Magnolia Evans," she replies back with a smile. She had finally found the peculiars she had been looking for.
