In Book 2, all we know is that somehow, Caroline's bag had her own diary when she intended to read Elena's diary in front of all of Fell's Church. But we don't know exactly how Damon did the switch. DISCLAIMER: All characters belong to L J Smith. I only came up with the plot.
Elena's P.O.V
Caroline was sneaky, I'll give her that. Making the bag as part of her costume. I want to disappear, just leave all my mistakes behind. When everyone hears what's in my diary, Stefan will surely be exiled.
Damon's P.O.V.
I watched Elena fret, I wish I could tell her not to worry, but she still thinks of me as a monster. I held the green diary in my hands, waiting for the perfect moment when I would make the switch. Caroline had a malicious smile on her face as she quietly conversed with the lady who had given them their gown-dress thing. Quietly and quickly, I pried open the bag with my fingers and dropped the green book while simultaneously picking up the blue one. I sliently closed the bag before Caroline noticed, I melted back into the shadows, tucking the blue velvet diary in my jacket. Smirking, I exited the room and went to where the audience was seated, ready to enjoy the show.
Elena's P.O.V.
This is it, our poem recital, I'm never going to forgive myself after this, I probably have stress lines on my forehead. I sacn the audience, Stefan shares my distress, I see Damon, off to the side, he catches my eye and winks, I send him a death glare, how can he be so calm? I refocuse on Caroline as she takes her time walking up to the podium. A slow smile spreads across her face.
Caroline takes her time, saying how she was going to tell the townspeople something worth more than a poem, claiming to unearth the towns recent deaths. I grow frightened more and more as Caroline lazily opens the bag, I watch in horror as I expect to see my diary, a little book, sealing Stefan's doom. I feel my eyes widen as Caroline pulls out, not my familiar diary, but her own, green velvet diary. The expression on her face was priceless, the audience remained slient, waiting in a bated breath for her to reveal the answer behind the deaths.
Damon's P.O.V.
I feel my lips stretching into a smirk as I watch the baffled expression on Caroline's face. She recovers quickly, opening the cover in hopes that it would be Elena's words, only to be greeted by her own handwriting of her diary. I notice Elena's gaze shift to me again. I give her a knowing smirk and a wink. A lady helps Caroline of the stage, who was still baffled by the switch. I see Elena coming closer to me and I offer her a grin, knowing that she can't hate me as much now.
