A/N: This was an entry for a banner contest; I had to write a less than 1,000 word drabble based on a graphic. I don't have the original graphic but I made my own so check it out on my profile page before you read this. I'm thinking of maybe writing a story based off of this, haven't decided yet. Let me know what you think!
"No you don't understand I HAVE to get to New York City."
"I'm sorry sir, but every spot on the next three flights are booked. There's a flight at 6:10 tomorrow morning-"
I groaned and tugged on the ends of my hair. Someone up there was out to make my life a living hell. I'd bet it was my grandfather. I slammed my fist down on the counter before trying one more time. "Listen, I know you don't know me, but I HAVE to get to New York. I'll take ten connecting flights if I have to but I need to get there."
The bald man behind the counter sighed and began typing on his keyboard. "Let me guess. A girl."
I shook my head with a small grin. "Not just a girl, the love of my life. I made a mistake once and I'm not going to make it again." The bald man smiled and handed me a piece of paper. I glanced at the ticket dumbfounded before snapping my head back up to him.
"You have exactly seven minutes to get through security and to that gate. Show the guard at the line your ticket and he'll push you to the front of the line."
I screamed with happiness and thanked him before running through the ticketing area towards security. It was all up to me now. I turned the corner and paused briefly searching for the guards. I scanned the crowd and found two on the side at the back and took off towards them. I showed them my ticket and one escorted me up to the front of the line. I quickly thanked him as I threw my shoes on the belt along with my backpack and small suitcase.
I hurried through and when I was cleared shoved my shoes on my feet and grabbed my bags. My body was trying to keep up with my feet as I ran toward the gate that was on the ticket; of course it was at the end of the terminal. I dodged people as best as I could, yelling an apology back at them when I couldn't move in time. My lungs were burning and my side was aching but I couldn't stop, I didn't have time; I had to be on that plane. The gate quickly came into sight and I ran faster pushing myself harder.
"Last call for passengers on Flight 835 to New York City."
"Wait!" I felt many eyes turn toward me but I didn't care. I ran up to the podium and, out of breath, handed the flight attendant my ticket."
"Welcome aboard. Any special reason for visiting NYC?"
I grinned and stood up straight before walking through the open door to the tarmac. "Beginning my life." I heard her chuckle as I walked across the pavement to the steps leading up to the plane. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and hit my speed dial as I stepped inside and searched for the only seat available. The phone rang as I spotted the one empty seat left. It was the last row, the far seat at the window. I happily shoved my bags into the overhead bin and climbed over the two seated passengers before collapsing in my seat. The phone clicked signaling a pick up.
"Hello?"
I smiled at her sweet voice that was laced with questions and let out the breath I was holding. "Baby I'm coming."
"Really?" she whispered. "You're really going to be here?"
I nodded suddenly choked up before staring out the window at the dark night sky. "Yes. I'm coming home."
