Ogre's Blood

Clang. Clang. Thump. The two people descended the wooden stairs, then a light was switched on, bathing the basement laboratory with bright white light. Various glass beakers and tubes bubbled with life. Liquids were kept in specially labeled containers and jars. Most important, a beaker filled with a greenish-liquid bubbled nearby. The glass was labeled "Ogre's Blood."

Carefully, the beaker was picked up, and a small amount was poured into a petri dish. The dish was then brought over to a mid-sized terrarium, in which lived a white rat. The creature sniffed the air anxiously, its beady red eyes watching the person putting the dish into its territory. The rat sniffed the liquid apprehensively, then began to drink it up.

"Ze rat is accepting the blood," the old scientist muttered, watching the rat intently. Pushing his glasses farther up on his nose, he coughed into a loosely clenched fist, then looked over at his friend, who was also watching the rat. "Vat do you think?"

The silver-armor-clad being beside him nodded. "It's taking it very well, I would say," the creature uttered. He looked over at the doctor with his silver eyes. "What kind of reaction are we looking for, Boskonovich?"

Dr. Boskonovich returned to watching the rat. "Vight now, ve are only watching for a pozztive reaction to the blood," he murmured. "Zank you again for retrieving ze blood, Yoshimitsu."

Yoshimitsu nodded, smiling. "My debt to you is repaid," he replied, holding up the left arm the scientist had repaired for him so many years ago. Boskonovich laughed, then turned back to the rat.

The small white rat was slurping up the glowing green liquid as if it was going out of style. Yoshimitsu and Boskonovich turned to each other, grinning happily. "Looks like the blood vill vork after all," the elderly doctor said. Yoshimitsu nodded in agreement, then on a silent agreement they returned to the rat.

The rat had finished the blood, and was now sniffing around its small glass confinement, its eyes flashing, and something….different…coming over it. Suddenly, Yoshimitsu straightened up, having realized what was happening. The rat…a side effect of the Ogre Blood must be rapid growth, because the rat was already twice its size, and had only finished the liquid three minutes before! Stunned, Yoshimitsu turned to Dr. Boskonovich. The Russian scientist was furiously taking notes on the effects of the blood on the rat, and was oblivious to the rat's quickened growth. Yoshimitsu was about to tap the doctor on the shoulder to alert him to the rapid side effect, when a small crack broke the silence. Yoshimitsu peered over his shoulder, and held in an astonished gasp.

The rat was completely filling the terrarium, and was about to burst out! In a quick motion, Yoshimitsu snatched Dr. Boskonovich away from the table.

"Yoshi! Vat are you doing?" Boskonovich cried.

"No time to explain. We have to go, now," he replied quickly, cradling the 88-year-old scientist underneath his right arm. The cracks grew louder, and they were coming quickly. Yoshimitsu knew their time was running out. With a deep breath, he dashed up the creaky wooden basement stairs just as the still-growing white rat burst out of its glass cage. He threw the door open, found the entrance to the mansion, and threw the door open, sprinting away from the house as quickly as he could, ignoring Boskonovich's cries.

Not even a minute after Yoshimitsu and Dr. Boskonovich burst out of the two-story mansion, a gigantic white rat with glittering scarlet eyes exploded out of the roof of the house, sniffing its new surroundings excitedly.
