Link's Awakening: What Came After

Link opened his eyes and found that he was floating with the smashed remnants of his ship. With a bit of effort, he clambered aboard a beam. As he sat there, he looked up and watched with awe as the Wind Fish flew overhead.

"It was more than a dream after all..." he mused. He sat there contentedly for a quarter of an hour. Then, it dawned on him.

"Wait, how am I supposed to get out of here? Hey! Wind Fish! What do I do now?" he shouted. He received no reply. "Great. Just great. Ugh... I'm starving. Let me see... Nope. No fish in these waters." He sighed. "I'm going to die, aren't I?"

Marin squawked with joy as she flapped her new wings. The Wind Fish had granted her wish! She was a seagull! Now, she could fly to all the peoples of the world and sing for them! She looked down and saw Link sitting on the debris that was his old ship. Deciding to assure him that she was fine, she swooped down and settled next to him. The happiness that was swelling inside her blinded her to the fact that Link was licking his lips as he watched her. She opened her beak and tried to sing the Ballad of the Wind Fish... But instead, a horrible squawking sound came out. Just then, she felt strong hands clasp around her body. She tried flapping her wings in an attempt to escape, but Link just growled in anger and snapped them. She squawked in pain.

"I'm sorry little guy, but it's either you or me. Being that I am the stronger and smarter of us, I think I deserve to live more. Besides, if you knew half the things I've done, you'd gladly offer yourself to keep me alive." Marin couldn't believe that these words were coming out of his mouth. After everything they'd been through together, how could he do this to her? Then, she remembered that, what with her being a seagull and all, Link couldn't possibly recognise her. There had to be some way to alert him to who she really was. But how? Link set Marin down next to him and began plucking her feathers out. When she began writhing in an attempt to escape, Link snarled and bit her neck, killing her instantly. When he finished plucking the feathers, he took a few deep breaths as he braced himself for the experience of eating raw meat. As he bit into Marin's flesh, he couldn't help but feel that he was doing something terribly wrong.

About a week later, Link still wasn't any better off. He'd long since finished off the seagull that came to him; he'd even eaten the bones. The ocean had been very still and quiet a few days ago, but now a wind was blowing. Link could see dark clouds billowing on the horizon; a storm was brewing. He had nothing that could protect him from the ocean's wrath. He began thinking back on his life. Why did he think that it was a good idea to awaken the Wind Fish? Koholint Island may have been a dream, but it was vastly superior to what little he would experience of the real world. Perhaps there was more to the Nightmares's wishes than had been apparent. Their motives were clearly selfish, but they evidently had the right idea. Screw all that rubbish about having to wake up sometime. He was going to die! Link wished that he had Marin with him. At least she could provide him with company before he met his end.

Soon, the storm reached him and the waves knocked him off his support. He battled in vain to stay afloat until a huge wave crashed on top of him and he knew no more.
