"La la la la, la la la la, Elmo's world" the high squeaky voice sang on the television. "La la la la, la la la la, ELMO'S WORLD!" it was mimicked loudly by a child's voice. I rolled over, smoothly pulling the blanket tight over my ears. There was a splash of running water, followed by a woman's voice singing. "Rubber ducky, you're the one. You make bath time lots of fun." I curled up against Emily's side. It was way too early for this. Between the darkness of Emmy's basement bedroom and her dual role as an amazing best friend and an incredibly comfortable pillow, I almost fell back asleep. The thought was violently murdered as a thump resounded through the house and the light switched on; it was temperamental that way. I covered my face with the blanket, trying desperately to block out the light. Needless to say, it didn't work. I softly drew in a deep breath, enjoying the combined smells of incense, chocolate, chlorine, and spilled energy drinks. It was a weird smell, almost sickly sweet, thick and cloying, but it always made me feel content. Cautiously I opened my eyes. I blinked rapidly, trying desperately to get used to the light. As my eyes adjusted I was able to see Emmy's room properly. The room was a mess, a comfortable mess, but still a mess that we would inevitably be told to clean up: an order we would noisily try to ignore. If you looked you could almost see what had happened last night. The floor was littered with scattered books, some half read, empty energy drink cans, Tim Tam wrappers, and a Thrifty Foods bulk bag with some gummy worms still in it. The T.V. was still on although the movies were long over. Both of them. By the door there were two slightly damp plastic bags from when we had gone swimming last night. Emmy rolled over, opening her eyes. "Turn off the light, Yun yun (my nickname). It's too early." I grinned brightly before quickly turning off the light and falling asleep again. This was what we did. This was us. This was - is - my best friend.
