Chloe promised that she wouldn't fall asleep during the movie but it didn't surprise Max when she heard snoring only ten minutes into the action. Max lifted her head off of Chloe's lap and looked up. A smile played on the sleeping girl's face as if she knew she broke her promise and laughed about it in her dreams. Max couldn't help but laugh along with her. She looked so happy. Max's demeanor started to fall. She looked so happy, unlike earlier that morning. A hand reached up to brush some stray blonde hairs out of Chloe's face. She could fix this. She would fix this. If sleeping was one of Chloe's ways to escape the pain for now, then so be it. The least she could do was make sure that sleep was peaceful.
Though that wishful thinking was almost ruined when a loud vibration followed by a ping sounded off in Max's left pocket. Chloe's snores halted and she flinched. Max hurriedly dug out her phone and set it to silent mode. She glanced back over to Chloe and instinctively held her breath. Max never thought she'd be so relieved to her the sound of chainsaws again in her life. She sighed before glancing back down at the glowing screen of her cellphone. She pressed a couple of buttons to open up a new text message.
From: Victoria
hope ur still coming to the party
nd let me do ur makeup k? love ya~
Weird. So weird that it almost made her shiver. It made her wonder how she and Victoria became such good friends in this timeline. Another message came in with a simple red heart. This time Max shuddered. Victoria was so nice. It just didn't make any sense. Regardless of the general creepiness, Max felt the need to at least send her something back. She agreed to the makeup session and sent back the same heart. Just this conversation alone made her want to scan through the rest of her alternate ego's messages.
Max scrolled. And scrolled. How many people did this Max know? She started from the bottom of the list all the way back to the top. Of course Victoria was at the very top seeing as she seemed to text her nonstop but the name under hers caught her attention. She had to click it. This world's Nathan Prescott was probably just as messed up as the one she knew.
Max scrolled. And scrolled. Even weirder than Victoria. She wanted to stop but nothing here screamed 'murderous psychopath' in their conversations. If anything, this Nathan was friendly. Not as nice as Victoria, but tolerable. She was about to put her phone away when she spotted a strange message from herself to him. What did parentheses and all those slashes mean? That couldn't be...No. Was she blushing?
She quickly dragged down the previous message.
From: Nathan
r u goin to haydens later
toris gonna be there too
i wanna see that dorky smile of urs
She clicked her phone off. That didn't—That couldn't mean that...Nathan found her cute. That would mean that she, this alternate Max of course, found Nathan cute. There was no way. No way that in any timeline, dimension, or lifetime that she would flirt with Nathan. She didn't even want to think of how that would work out. Nope. Never.
The last words of his message echoed in her head.
Max covered her reddening face in her hands.
