Author's Note: This was something I wrote in 2007 for a child's point of view prompt. I was recently digging through some old files when I found it, and thought I'd finally share it on here. It's simple, but I hope you enjoy.
you see the two of them come home and walk up the stairs quietly. curiosity takes a hold of you and you find yourself trailing a few steps behind them. you hide in the hall closet because you know no one will find you in there as long as you don't make any noises. every time someone gets found in there it's because they made a noise. you hold your stuffed monkey close to your chest as you peer out of the small crack. your friend daphne crouches next to you and looks out as well. she's better at hiding than you'll ever be but you like it that way. no one can ever find her. no one but you.
you see the two of them stare at each other for a minute. you don't hear them say anything. you wonder what's going on and why they're just standing there, staring. just as you're about to leave to do more interesting stuff like make potions in the bathroom or play dress up...
you see the two of them kiss. you wonder what took them so long. you always thought that they acted just like daddy and nora. they did everything that they did, but they never hugged or kissed each other. you always wondered why, but thought that they were just pretending they didn't love each other. you're glad that they don't want to pretend anymore. pretending is only fun sometimes anyway. like when you get to pretend you're a doctor or a princess. you think about all of the things you like to pretend to be until the door starts to creek because you're leaning on it. you're scared that you'll get found because you made a noise. you hear footsteps coming from down the hall toward you so you hide in the corner. the door opens and someone swings you around, then scoops you up into their arms and begins to tickle you. you laugh even though you got caught.
"Were you spying on us?" he asks you. he doesn't seem too mad, but he never gets mad at you.
"maybe," you say with a giggle.
"You know it's not nice to spy on people, right Smarti?"
you nod.
"I'm not mad or anything," he says before adjusting you in his arms, "I just need you to promise not to tell anyone, okay?"
"but why?" you ask.
"You just can't... cause, uh, it's a secret. I know you're good at keeping secrets," he said poking you.
"can I tell daphne? please, please, please, please? I'll tell her not to tell anyone, promise," you plead.
"Alright... but no one else. Got it, Smarti?" he smiles at you.
"got it, smerek!"
"Good. Now, I promise you that if you keep this secret, one day I'll tell you all about why you couldn't tell anyone. Because by then, everyone else will know the secret too."
"okay," you say, "then I can't wait for that day because I think everyone will really be happy!"
"Oh yeah? Why's that?" he asks you curiously.
"because I can see that you're really happy. and I can see casey's really happy too. and it makes me really happy and I know it will make everyone really happy too!" you tell him.
"Yeah," he says with a slight smile. "I hope so."
