Halloween
10-31-01
AN: Halloween and a full moon haven't occurred on the same night since 1955 and won't again until 2020. I took the opportunity presented.
"Guillaume, when are you going to tell us why we are spending three days running around in ether space "on our way" back to Blue Heaven? We could've made it in half a day in subether! Is there reason behind this field trip or have you become suddenly irrational?" Gene's voice, laced with sarcasm, beat its weary, repetitive tones on the ears of the Outlaw Star. Running his hand through his hair, Gene laid his battle-scarred shoulders against the back of the commander's chair and gazed pointlessly at the LCD/light screen that manifested the entity known as Guillaume.
"Anige, shaddup. You know he won't tell.," moaned the blonde mechanic draped over the seatback ahead of Gene. Gene lifted his feet and set the heels down on the crest of the headrest, not troubling to avoid Jim's mop of yellow hair.
"Dammit, anige!" he yelped, rubbing his head. Gene only shrugged.
Warm vapor teased Gene's left arm as the cup it emanated from was tipped to the mouth of a beautiful, duty-bound assassin. "I've always maintained that traveling places with you makes even places I've been to more interesting. Maybe this detour will prove more interesting than it appears."
"Besides," came a petulant voice from Gene's right, "we've already wasted the three days. Why not see whatever Guillaume wants to show us?" The bell around Aisha's neck rung, punctuating her statement as she tilted her head.
"All right already! Jeez...you ask a question..."
"--for the twentieth time," mumbled Jim.
"--and you get mobbed! Everyone is ganging up on me!!"
"I have not commented yet," Guillaume added. "So 'everyone' is an incorrect statement."
Melfina watched as the crew continued to squabble, vaguely paying attention to the words. Her mind dwelt mostly on the void dotted with silver sparks passing steadily across the thick glass. And then she spotted it...is it really? As they drew closer, she became sure. Withdrawing from the capsule, Melfina dressed and made her way into the cockpit of the Outlaw Star. Busy as they were with fighting, Gene and the others didn't notice Mel's movement until she walked in front of Gene and Jim. Standing by the window, Melfina watched the orb draw closer; soon the others noticed it as well. As the ship passed close to the Earth, Melfina turned away from the globe and looked out the opposite window. Guillaume spoke.
"Today is All Hallows Eve, and the night of the full moon on Earth. Such a rare occurrence happens once every 20-50 years. There is much mythology associated with the moon of the source of all humanity, but a full orange moon on Halloween, because of its rarity, is said to grant wishes.
Melfina smiled back at the benevolent face in the orange countenance of the moon and her lips mouthed the words her heart spoke.
"Tell me who I am."
