"Are you sure you do not want to come with me, Mina?"

The creature watches. Waits.

She isn't his true goal. In the grand scheme of things, she is perhaps the most unimportant player of them all. But she is also the pivot – and so it she who is now his prey.

She doesn't know any of that, of course. She believes that she is safe; content in the trust that she has the love of her husband – and that of the man whose face she has never seen, but who she loves.

If only she knew.

Oh, she is undoubtedly pretty and docile; the vision of the ideal wife. Perhaps in another life, her beliefs would have been more than simply beliefs. But in this lifetime, the one she is living, she had encountered that one undeniable woman whose acquaintance – whose friendship and devotion – means that she is simply ignorant of her doom.

Vanessa Ives loves her best friend more than any other in the world, and it is that best friend who will be her downfall.

The creature is not the most patient of beings, but it waits. It cannot move until Vanessa Ives is primed for her part in the destruction to come. Until she has accepted the demon inside of her, Mina Harker is unimportant.

But for all that the creature cannot take action on the girl now, there has never been anything said about its pushing forward the timeline of events. The strength it requires to poison the waters of Lake Tanganyika for a moment is insignificant to one as ancient as him.

The boy is dead, and the creature knows that his patience is almost at an end.

The faceless man increases his visits to the once-Mina Murray, and Jonathon Harker is almost cloyingly affectionate. She latches on to a man she does not know in order to escape what she views as the obsessiveness of her husband.

She knows nothing.

From the place where it waits, watching, the creature smiles. It is a broken, twisted shade of what a true smile should be, but its purpose is unmistakable.

Its wait is almost over.

Soon, Mina Harker will learn the truth of the man she has fallen in love with. Soon, she will meet his master – and soon, she will be the one who heralds the end of the world.

For now, she is safe in her illusions.

"I think I will, actually."

Mina Harker moves to get ready for the night, and her husband turns to the window. With an almost inaudible growl, the creature hurries off.

It would not do to displease his master. Not when Mina Harker is already safely within his coils.

A/N: This has been written and posted before I've seen the season 1 finale.
I love Penny Dreadful because of the layers it adds to the story - everything and everyone is connected in some way, even when it's not obvious, and I couldn't help but wonder just how/if
Jonathan Harker was connected to it all.
About the last bit: Fenton seems so much more - well, sane - than the unnamed vampire that everyone thinks is the Master, so I have my doubts that he's the one behind it all. Which is why I think that there's a lot more to the Master than what we've been shown.

I hope you guys liked it! Please don't forget to drop a review on your way out :)
