Even after everything Scully was there to comfort him. After they had flown back to DC, he was still the wreck of the week. When they got to his apartment he begged her to stay. He pleaded with her. Her heart broke for him, so she agreed.
They sat on his couch and as she cradled him in her arms as he cried. He hated himself for it. He should be there for Scully, not the other way around.
He cried for a good half hour before he could really talk. He talked of wanting to cry and wanting the home he never had. It all came spilling out…over twenty years of hardships poured out through tears.
And then he cried for Scully and everything he had inadvertently caused her. Did he really have the right to have her endure such pain because of his unwillingness –or possible inability- to give up his quest? His damned quest to find his damn truth; was it all worth it?
And if he found his truth, what price would he pay for knowledge? The lives of the Gunmen, Scully, or another member of one of the families? What part of his corner of the universe was about to be taken away from him next?
After all of this he heard Scully crying with him. He looked into her crystalline blue eyes and realized that it wasn't herself she was crying for; it was him.
