Chapter 1: Curse or Gift, All the Same

The alarm clock blared loudly, jolting me from my sleep. My eyes flew open to be blinded by the sun streaming through the windows, illuminating the room. The white walls were bare and the wooden shelves held nothing. I closed my eyes concentrating hard. The alarm clock turned off. I step out of bed, eyes still closed as the blinds of my windows shut. I reopened my eyes watching as my bed remade itself with surprising speed, and even the smallest wrinkles were flattened out. The door of my closet flew open revealing the final shirt left. It flew to my outstretched hands. I pulled it over my head. As the breeze from the hallway beyond my door drafted in I shivered, my bare knees cold and covered in goose bumps. I walked calmly to my opened drawer and heard the click of my closet closing. I pulled on my pants and walked from my room grabbing some socks and a jacket. I hopped down the stairs pulling my socks on. Something seemed strange. My parents were nowhere to be seen.

I walked cautiously downstairs knowing my powers could've caused someone to target me. Especially since I was soon to join the mutant corps in the military. My power. Oh, my power. I could copy others. Pick their DNA out from floating particles of human skin then copy them. I could keep these powers forever. My senses were stronger and tuned to everything, yet only when I wanted. I was a quick regenerator and I had telekinesis. Or something close to it. I could control air… form it and use it to do anything. But as I reached the bottom step all I heard was the collaborative shout of everyone throwing a party in celebration of my leaving.

"Why are you guys happy for me leaving? That's rude considering I'll be protecting your freedom in the Mutant Corps for 5 years." I said.

"Johnny… you know we didn't mean it like that. We just wanted you to know there are people that love you." My mom said quickly. She stood behind everyone due to her height. She was near 6' 6". It had something to do with our mutant gene.

"And we wanted to convince you not to get your ass shot." Harley said quietly. He'd been my friend since preschool, but never knew I was mutant.

The party then started before I could say a words as my dad walked out with his famous sausage balls. Lilli brushed her hand on mine as she passed. We were more than friends but my mutation had me not wanting to start real relationships.

A bus parked outside and an armed guard walked to the door knocking loudly. "The departure for basic is set 6 hours early for safety reasons. We need John to come with us." The guard demanded.

I walked out the door. It had seemed too fast. Too rushed. I grabbed my duffel bag of belongings and boarded the bus. I sat next to a man with bristles sticking from his wrists. Obviously not a wonderful sight. I tried to control the input of DNA strands fighting their ways into my head. Bristles shot out of my wrists quickly startling the man next to me. My fists turned metal and I could suddenly see through the bus. Then the powers died down and the bus headed to the airport. I was going to basic.
