Chris Larabee paused with his hand raised to knock on his agent's door as voices suddenly raised inside. His mouth fell open as he heard his youngest agent's angry voice explode, "I'm not made to bend over and be your Pony Express!"

"But, baby -- !"

"Don't 'but, baby' me, Buck! You were the one out carousing last night!"

"I told you, JD; I wasn't carousing! I was just having a few drinks with Chris!"

Larabee's eyebrows shot up at that. He'd shared a few drinks with Buck last night, true enough, but it had been early on in the night when they'd first gotten off work. Foregoing the knock, his hand closed around the knob instead, but still he hesitated.

"Same thing," JD stiffly put out.

"No, it's not, honey. There ain't another man in all o' existence for me. You know that, or at least, I thought you did. Look, if you don't wanna be the horse, sweetheart, I'll be the horse. It doesn't matter who's the stallion."

Chris' eyes widened. He could scarcely believe those words had just come out of Buck Wilmington's mouth! His hand fell back to his side.

"Since when?" JD questioned.

"Since I've been with you."

Chris shook his head. Despite the wooden door that separated them, he could see the look on Buck's face right now as plainly as if he had been standing in front of him. His eyes were wide, his expression a charming mix of pitiful helplessness and endearing love. His hands were spread open before him, palms up, and his eyes wore the mask of a complete beggar. But perhaps it wasn't a mask this time, Chris reflected, for he knew that Buck loved JD with his entire heart and soul, just as he loved his own Vin.

As JD's voice rose once more, Chris pulled back with a slight shake of his blonde head. He'd leave his friends to their debate and return later to ask Buck the questions he needed to about yesterday's mission. As he turned his back to the door and walked away, he wished the boy luck. Then he paused and smirked as he realized he wasn't sure just which boy he meant. Chuckling softly to himself, Chris went about his business, knowing full well that Buck would be even angrier than JD was now if he had any guess at all that Chris still thought of him as a boy.
