With a start, Will awoke from his dream. He bolted upright in bed, trying to clear the awful nightmare from his mind. It had involved Tessa, like most of his dreams these days. Mortmain was hurting her, and Will was watching, but whenever he went to help her, he couldn't move his legs or arms. He couldn't even speak. He was helpless, and that's what scared him the most.
At that moment, Will thought he heard a cry. Oh God, he thought. Please, don't be Tessa. No, no, no! He sprung from his bed, and raced down the hallways of the Institute towards Tessa's room. He slowed his footsteps, careful not to wake her. Quietly, he opened the door. To his relief, there was no one else in the room. But as he drew closer to her bed, he could see that she was dreaming. She was stirring, the sheets tangled around her, and sweat plastered her face.
"Will," she cried out, still dreaming. "Will, I'm so sorry, I just wanted-" Sobs racked her body as she slept. Will's heart broke; she was dreaming about him. And crying. Suddenly, her eyes flew open, and focused on him.
"Will," she said, but this time she was awake. "Is-Is this-am I dreaming? You wouldn't be here if I wasn't…."
Will hesitated before answering. 'Yes. You're dreaming, Tess." But he stepped closer, and reached out for her. He gently brushed the hair from her forehead.
Then, Tessa slowly moved her hand to meet Will's. She interlaced her fingers with his and sighed. "I-I love you Will. I just wanted you to know before I-" But she cut off her own sentence as she drifted back to sleep. Her facial features relaxed, and Will knew she was back in her dreams again.
Will pulled the sheets back around Tessa's shoulders. Then, he bent over and pressed his lips to her forehead. "I love you too, Tess." With that, he left the room, without another sound.
