Maruader era, fifth year.
It was the mad twittering of the birds outside the dorm window that woke Sirius up. Their persistent song penetrated through the fragile walls of his dream and, after spending a few seconds fruitlessly trying to cling on to the last waves of sleep, he was forced to open up his eyes with a long yawn. The first thing Sirius became aware of was the warm solid mass pushing against the right side of his body. He glanced downwards to see Remus fast asleep beside him, his lanky, bony body curled up against Sirius's. A smile spread across Sirius's face. It seemed to warm his very cheeks.
Sunlight was pouring through the windows and a long golden beam of it fell across Remus's face. It illuminated his honey coloured hair, the locks of which seemed to be fading in colour these days, but the sunlight made Remus's thick curls look like spun gold. A few scars ran across his cheeks, usually so faint in the fortunately dim light of the castle, however they now gleamed like shards of glass, shiny and pink. Sirius couldn't resist the urge to reach out and brush his fingers across them.
Beneath Sirius's fingertips, Remus twitched. Sirius leaned in very close to him, his hot breath blowing against Remus's cheek, drinking in the familiar smell of chocolate and parchment. "Hey, Moony," Sirius whispered.
Remus made a small, indeciphrable grunt. Sirius hesitated, unsure if his lover was truly awake or not. He decided to proceed anyway.
"You know that I... I love you, right?" He breathed.
Sleepily, Remus gave a tiny nod. Sirius didn't say anything after that, he simply watched Remus as he slept, his pale chest heaving up and down. Sirius wished that James and Peter could come down with dragon pox more often, it really was quite nice to have the dorm to themselves.
Sirius sighed. He was never going to be content waking up alone ever again. He was always going to crave this moment.
