Best friends
McKay prepared himself to fly away with Jumper. Grodin and Miller waited paitently for him. They knew he won´t be satisfied until he´ll be sure to have everything for mission.
It was very important to success, if they´ll fail…
„Miller with Grodin will fly away without you, if you are spending more time with preparations."
He heard voice of major Sheppard behind his back. He sounded tired and worried, like everyone.
„Well, I try to safe this city. Do you hope I´ll forget something and you will allowed to safe the day?" He asked with grin.
„Yeah. It´s my turn anyway." He returned the grin to sciencist but his face suddenly became serious.
„Why are you here, major?" Asked Rodney with bad feeling.
„To say good bye." It was strange and pathetic. McKay didn´t like strange and pathtic things.
„You did before. As Teyla, Ford, Elizabeth and Zelenka. What´s wrong with all of you? It´s not suicide mission, you know?"
„Yes. But I just wanted to tell you something. Alone, without the others." He began to be nervous. It was simple. He spoke to his best friend so where is the problem? He just admited to himself that this egoistic and arogant pain-in-ass is his best friend. That was the problem.
„Please, major. I have no time for some chat. You can tell me when I´ll be back." He started his way to ramp of the Jumper but Sheppard´s hand stopped him. He turned back to meet major´s eyes. What the hell is going on?
„What the hell is going on? I have no time for this. Wraith will be here in 48 hours."
„I just wanted to tell you one thing. Be careful."
„That´s it? Be careful? You came here to Jumper bay to disturb me only to say me ´be careful´?"
Sheppard was angry. Can´t McKay see it? He though that McKay maybe thinks about him as about his best friend. But perhaps was he wrong. McKay could be still the same man like he was almost one year ago. But he wasn´t and Sheppard was one of the few people who realised it.
„No! I wanted to say to my best friend this: Watch that damned ass of yours out there because we need you here. Because you are the smartest man in this galaxy and when in this god forsaken city will break something, you are the only one who can fix it!"
McKay just stared at him and then he told the most improbable thing.
„Zelenka can handle it." He said simply.
„I am not speaking here about Zelenka but about you. Us. About things we went through together. I mean it. I never thought it would be possible but YOU ARE my best friend in this forgotten place and I respect you. You have got a lots of hidden talents and qualities. I do know it maybe better than you do."
„No, I know my qualities." Well, so much for sincerity.
„You know what I mean, Rodney." Expression in the sciencist´s face betrayed him.
„You´re right. It´s just… I would never…I never had a real friend or family before. And it´s very difficult to leave it behind now." Sheppard smiled and nodded.
„I can´t watch your back there, so please, try not to get killed yourself, ok?"
„I´ll try." McKay smiled back. „So, I have to go." Again, major´s hand stopped him. But he didn´t release him now. He gave him quick and hasitating hug. It was something between hug and hand shaking. Then he let go and turned to leave.
„Just be careful and come back soon."
„I´ll come back. I promise…John." Major told nothing on the fact that Rodney used his name for the first time. He simply smiled and left.
The sciencist watched him for the moment and then ordered very loudly and impaitiently:
„Are you waiting for Wraith get here, Miller? Take us out!"
