The moment of silence lasted about a minute. Then loud laughter rang throughout the dormitory.
As the door burst open, three blokes stumbled in one after the other, chuckling and discussing something at the same time.
"James," Sirius jumped onto the bed where James had been writing out his Potion's essay. All he had accomplished so far was the introduction. His mind always wandered to Lily.
"C'mon mate," the tallest of the bunch was digging in his trunk, his words muffled. Then he pulled his head out, hair disheveled as he pocketed a few coins. "Let's go to Hogsmeade."
With Sirius bouncing off the bed, his quill jiggled and some dripped onto his shirt. He cursed, glaring at his best mate. Then, his expression softened as he stared back at his essay. Or lack thereof.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair and balancing the paper on his knees. "Sorry, I can't go."
The other boys in the room all turned to stare at him, their mouths showing different expressions of horror and surprise.
"What?" they all yelled in unison.
"James! You have to go-" Sirius spoke right after yelling, the other two still frozen with shock.
"I have to finish my essay, actually-" he interrupted.
"There is no way you are staying here," the other two nodded at Sirius's statement.
James flopped back onto his pillow, groaning and running his hands over his face. He knew his friends would not make it easy for him to skip out on a Hogsmeade visit. But, he was putting off breaking up with his girlfriend. She was nice, but she was not the one he wanted. Hogsmeade would give him no choice but to do it. "I can't. Do not make me feel bad about going, because I want to go, but-"
"But, it won't be the same without you," Peter piped up, and James sat up in time to see Sirius and Remus grinning at each other. They already knew he would agree.
"Fine, I'll go."
While Frank went up to the bar to order them a round of Butterbeers, Alice and Lily found a table. As soon as Lily sat down she realized that she had a clear view of James sitting with a blond girl from Hufflepuff. Her nose wrinkled in distaste.
"Can you switch me seats, Alice?"
"Why?" she sounded confused, and Lily saw that there was an empty seat beside her so that she could sit next to Frank.
"Nevermind."
Alice craned her neck anyway to see what was bugging her. When she faced Lily she was smirking.
"What?"
"You're jealous of her," she spoke as if it were the truth and as if Lily actually cared what he was doing with such a promiscuous, rude, arrogant, selfish, and dim girl. Whatever he did on his own time was his business.
"Oh please! She's no good for him," Lily saw that they were holding hands. Both of his were covering hers, and she wondered for a moment what they would feel like on her own…
"And you know who would be, then?"
"No," she casted a glance at the pair once more before she spotted Frank navigating through the crowd. "But not her."
"Or anyone but you."
To that, Lily never responded.
