Destiny

"Hey, Sensei, guess what?"

"What's that?" Nozomi set down the basket that contained their picnic lunch as Rizvan spread out the blanket they had brought with them. He watched her smooth the corners and straighten the fabric across the grass before he sat down with his boots just past the blanket's edge. Nozomi had worn sandals, and when she slipped them off she placed them on the grass as she knelt on the blanket.

She paused for a second, looking around their surroundings as she stalled for time. Rizvan continued to watch her expression for clues to her thoughts. Finally, she smiled sheepishly and asked, "Do you remember back when we were going to go out around Christmastime but I came down with a fever?"

That certainly hadn't been what he had expected. He thought about her words for a moment. "Yes."

The vague pout she directed his way indicated that she had wanted a longer answer. She shrugged one shoulder and continued, "I never told you what I dreamed about while you took care of me, did I?"

He shook his head. "No. Was it something important?"

"Yes," Nozomi answered without hesitation. "Because you were in it." She unpacked the thermos of tea and container of rice balls from her basket.

Rizvan looked at her in surprise. "I was in your dream?" The idea filled him with warmth. "What was it about?"

"It was about the two of us going out kind of like this," Nozomi explained as she picked up a rice ball and nudged the container toward Rizvan. "We were eating a meal just like this one. Do you know what you told me?" Her eyes shone with mischief as she peeked up at him through her bangs.

Shaking his head wordlessly, Rizvan waited for the answer. Her manner of storytelling left him curious as to what the version of himself in her dreams had said.

She lowered her voice in a rather endearing attempt to sound more like him. "'This rice ball that you have chosen is also my destiny.'" Nozomi gave a small laugh and smiled up at him. "Isn't that silly?"

Rizvan felt a smile curl his lips. Instead of answering, his eyes fell on the rice ball held in her right hand. He reached out and gently grasped her wrist, raising it and the food toward himself. "If it is indeed my destiny," he said, then locked gazes with Nozomi as he leaned down and took a small bite from one corner of the rice ball. A vivid pink stained her cheeks by the time he had chewed the food and swallowed. "Very good."

An embarrassed laugh drifted up to him as he let go of her arm and plucked the rice ball from her fingers. He continued eating as Nozomi selected a different triangle and unwrapped the seaweed from the top corner. "Not bad," she commented after her first bite. "I'm getting better at this." Her smile had a feeling of pride behind it.

He tilted his head to the side and watched her for a moment. Perhaps she had only just begun learning to prepare food and the praise made her happy. Rizvan tried to think of some way to encourage her. "It is still a long way to the limits of your cooking ability, and so..."

His words trailed off as Rizvan found himself at a complete loss as to why Nozomi had suddenly doubled over laughing so hard she couldn't breathe.
