The pale moonlight crashed into his darkly lit apartment as he found himself spending yet another Saturday evening alone, going through old files, obsessing over the past. He could go out, he could meet someone and have some sort of "relationship" but in the end it really would mean anything. Other than his physical needs being met it wouldn't mean anything to him emotionally. That's what his files were all about, some need being responded to that no one person could. It was unfair, really, if you spent anytime thinking about it or analyzing it how unavailable he was emotionally, he came in a good package with the inside missing. It was almost as if he was human cotton candy; pretty to look at but just spun sugar and air.
At last he found the file he had been looking for, buried back in the closet of his bedroom. He had heard something today that triggered the memory of this case, the case he had worked with her before she got fed up and returned to medicine. Now he went it alone without any of her input or analysis. Back in the basement office working cases no one wanted to touch since they didn't earn you a "gold star" in your file or any sort of recognition. They weren't glamorous like the bank robberies, homeland security cases or other media worthy cases. He was happy to have his own quiet place in the bureau, at least that's what he told himself. He had pretty much always gone it alone even when he was partnered with her, but it would be nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of who didn't think you were crazy.
Enough reflection, all this self analysis in all honesty wasn't doing any good. OK back to the case he was looking for. "The Jersey Devil" back in '93. Could it really have been fourteen years ago? I guess time flies when you're having fun, or when you're pretending to have fun at least. Here it was the thing that triggered his memory of this case the wounds on the victims were very similar to the wounds on some recent victims found along the same stretch of highway. Of course if he tried to take this to his superiors they would either laugh or commit him to the local loony bin for good. They did after all, find and kill the "Jersey Devil" back in '93 but he always thought she had had off spring and now it looks as if that theory was right. He could just go and have his own little "look see" tomorrow since he didn't have any pressing plans. He would drive up to the police station tomorrow and convince them to let him see the most recent body, not that he was an expert on such things. This is when he missed her most, when he needed her scientific expertise on a case especially when looking at wound marks or cause of death. He finished reading the old case file even more sure in his decision to take his trip tomorrow sure that he would find the link to the case in '93 on the most recent victim.
