The Basement

"Hike, hike… blue 32." Matt called out as he was in football pose.

"Why blue 32?" Melina asked in confusion.

Matt shrugged, "It sounded cool." And with that reply, his friend who was a girl just shook her head and smiled at him.

"C'mon, dork, throw the ball!"

Matt did and she caught it. He chased her around until he stopped to catch his breath. She came to him and said playfully, "I think it's time to lay of the sweets, McGuire."

"That's not it." Matt wiped his hand across his forehead. "It's this heat. Why is it so hot!?" He sat down in the grass and Melina joined him short after.

"Want to go inside and stick our heads in the freezer?" She suggested.

"No. My mom says that will waste electricity." Matt rolled his eyes. "Maybe we can go downstairs. It's gotta be cooler than this heat-wave!"

He and she made their way downstairs to the basement. The air conditioner wasn't working at The McGuire's, so it was even hotter inside.

Dust fell everywhere while Matt, who was on his tip-toes, tried to reach a board-game as he was stretching his arms up. Laugher came from Melina because of his funny pose, which caused him to give a quick glare at her then continued to try once more. The snickering continued from Melina though. All the sudden, Matt was down on the floor and Melina laughed even harder.

"Noob!" She teased.

Matt just shook his head to get the dust off his head. "That was one big sneeze," he said as he gotten up and went beside Melina and she agreed.

"I guess board games are not a to-do now!"

"Matt, I didn't want to play those anyways."

A smile came upon both of the faces a few seconds later. In sync, they turned their heads face to face. "I have an idea, Matt."

"Talk to me." He said his famous line that he always uses for whenever someone has an idea and yet they still need to explain the details to him.

She explained to him, and then they both slowly shook their head with a grin and said, "Let's get to work."

"Woo!" a scream of excitement came from the basement.

"What do you think is going on down there?" Sam McGuire asked his wife Jo while continued to work up in the vent in the ceiling.

"I guess those kids finally found something to do." Jo smiled, and then frowned, "Well Matt, especially with Melina, there's bound to be trouble." Sam chuckled and agreed with her.

Suddenly Matt walked in the living room, wearing swim gear.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hi, sweetie." Jo greeted and glanced at him. "No flippers in the house."

"But I need them."

"For what?" She asked as she came down from the ladder.

"The pool." Matt answered bravely.

"We don't have a pool."

Sam yelled down from top of the ladder, "Matt, when you're done with the hose in the basement, I need it!"

Jo jaw dropped and her eyes stared at her son in disbelief, though she knew the stunt was something that he would do. She did not know why Sam needed a hose when he's fixing the air conditioner.

"I've gotta go… Bye…" Matt nervously ran off.

The End.
