Fair warning. I wrote this at 1 am.

"And all tucked in." Lyall Lupin smiled at his four year old son. "Goodnight Remus."

"Dad wait!" Remus' eyes were wide. "Could you check under my bed for monsters?"

Lyall gave an amused smile. "You just don't want to go to sleep yet."

Remus shook his head. "There really is a monster!" He insisted. "I saw it moving in the shadows!"

Lyall walked back into his son's room. "Remus it was probably just the branches from outside, see your window's open." And with that Lyall went over to the window and shut it.

"But it was by the ground dad!" Remus said. Please just check!"

Lyall sighed and sat down on Remus' bed. He pointed out the window. "See the branches way up at the top?" Remus nodded. Well, when the sun sets the shadows look closer to the ground."

Remus shifted around in his bed. "I guess.." he trailed off sounding unconvinced.

"Of course!" said Lyall, "Just the branches on the trees, nothing more." He ruffled his son's hair comfortingly.

He had risen to leave when Remus called him back. "Could you read me a story?" Lyall was about to refuse, telling Remus he was to old, when he took in his sons frightened face.

"Alright." Lyall finally gave in, "Magic or muggle?"

Remus weighed his options carefully as though it was the most important thing he would ever decide. "Magic." He eventually decided. "I want to see the pictures move."

"Which story?"

"The Fountain of Fair Fortune." Remus said after a moment.

Lyall smiled. "That one's my favourite."

Remus grinned. "Mine too!"

And so Lyall read. When he finally finished reading Remus's eyelids were drooping. "Goodnight." He said.

"But what if there is a monster?" Remus asked.

Lyall sighed. "Remus, there's no monster. It's just your imagination." There was a silence. "Have you been listening to the boy next door?" Remus nodded. "Well stop it. Goodnight Remus, I love you."

"Love you to dad. Goodnight." Lyall turned out the lights and left the room, leaving the door open just a crack.

Under the bed Fenrir Greyback smiled.
