She sat in
their office, alone. She wondered where he was, not because she
worried that he might be late, but she longed to hear his voice
again. She tried to picture his face, but it was fuzzy and
disconnected without spontaneous words being spoken to her and a
warm smile shining towards her. She tried to hear his voice in
the back of her mind, but she could only imagine phrases that
he'd already said to her and therefore were only on the edge of
reality. She closed her eyes, but it was still not him. His
essence could not be captured, like the sun could never have a
shadow.
Every moment he was away, her heart felt half-empty. After all
these years they had become two people inseparable. While they
had maintained two independent minds and two almost contrasting
views of the world, their souls were somehow woven together in
the tapestry of life. It sometimes seemed that if they were too
long apart, the tapestry might wither away, eventually becoming
nothing but broken threads to be swept under a rug and forgotten.
Love was funny that way.
