"Just You & Me"
Kurt/Victor (OC)
14th installment (direct sequel to Heart of the Matter)

It was something they hadn't gotten around to doing yet, but as the opportunity came, it was all they could think about. The club was about to have its first performance in front of some audience since Victor had joined them, and Mr. Schuester had put a deal to them: they would perform four numbers. One of those would be a group number, but the other three were open slots, and those would be theirs to try out for. Solos, duets, trios, whatever they wanted. And it didn't take Kurt and Victor time to decide; they wanted one of those slots, to perform a duet.

"He'll never give it to us," Kurt shook his head as they went on down the hall.

"Of course he will, why wouldn't he?" Victor frowned. "Between the two of us, we've got a couple of extraordinary voices; it'd be crazy not to give it to us… You worry too much about it," Victor insisted.

"Well Rachel will be getting one of those."

"That leaves two."

"It's not even about the numbers. I know what he'll say. 'The two of you boys together, it's going to cause a lot of noise, I don't want you getting hurt,'" Kurt imitated their director. Victor smirked.

"When did the fight go out of you? Used to be you'd tell me how you went for it, no matter what, you tried."

"Well maybe this one just matters too much, and not trying at all, it at least lets me believe what I want to believe the answer would be," he shook his head, but then he felt Victor's hand in his.

"Then we'll just have to make sure he can't say no. We'll blow him away; he won't know what hit him." Kurt smiled, his momentary self doubt leaving him behind.

"You're right. Well we better play to strengths… unless Broadway might steer us wrong here…"

"It's never done so before," Victor nodded. "Come on, let's give our regards," he turned them around to go back to the Glee room. Once they were left alone, they started to think. Kurt sat at the piano, dragging his fingers from key to key without pressing on them. Victor leaned on the side, thinking.

"What are we going for?" Kurt asked. Victor's eyebrows raised, as though to say 'what do you mean?' "Well, do we want to go like…" he started to play, "Couple of guys on a journey." Victor smirked. "Or pining…" he changed his tune, Victor changed his face. "Or just having fun," both shifted again. Kurt stopped, Victor looked at him, and he smiled as he played again, a different kind of song. "Or do we go for a bit more of a… love song?" He looked up, and Victor was smiling, too.

"Oh, I think you know." Kurt breathed out. "Look, the way I see it, I've been made to feel 'wrong' for who I was for too long. I'm done with that. Plus, we've got each other now… It can't be as scary anymore, it really can't. This is what we want, and we're going to get it, it's that easy," Victor firmly nodded. Kurt smiled.

"Well if you're going to put it that way…" he sat up straighter on the piano bench. Victor nodded to himself, and then to Kurt.

"Yep, I am." Kurt began to play a new song, and Victor smiled as he recognized it. "If that doesn't get us that performance slot, I don't know what will."

"Well we said no fear…"
