"Ramona! Breakfast!" Kimmy yelled from the kitchen. Ramona slowly stumbled down the stairs into the kitchen. "I'll pick you up after school today. I have an appointment." Kimmy announced.
Ramona sighed, "Again?!"
"Don't worry, my appointment is before school gets out, so you won't have to go with me this time."
"Thank god." Ramona replied, playfully.
"Six more weeks, and then I won't have so many appointments."
"Yeah." Ramona replied.
"Trust me, the first time you meet her, your life will instantly change forever, Ramona. You may not believe that right now, but just wait until you finally see her and hold her." Kimmy smiled.
"I know, mom. I'm still just really scared. I know it'll be different once she's actually here. I know I'll fall in love with her when I see her and hold her for the first time. Just try not to have this one in a rental car...please?!"
Kimmy giggled. "I'm going to do my best."
Ramona finished eating her breakfast. Then, the two hugged as Ramona grabbed her lunch and scurried outside towards the bus stop.
Later that afternoon...
Ramona waited 30 minutes after school, watching various cars arrive at school, pick up students, and leave. She waited anxiously, watching cars drive by, looking for her mother. Finally, she decided to call her mom's best friend, her godmother, DJ.
"Hey Ramona, what's up? Is everything ok?" DJ questioned. It was odd for her to receive a call from Ramona.
"Aunt Deejay, I'm really worried. Mom still hasn't picked me up from school. She had an appointment this afternoon and she was supposed to pick me up after...do you think something happened?! The baby?"
DJ swallowed a hard lump in her throat. Having been pregnant three times herself, she knew of the many complications. "I'm sure if something happened with the baby and she needed to go to the hospital, your mom would have called and let us know. She probably went to the grocery store, or something. I'll come pick you up. If she gets there before I do, call me back, okay?"
"Okay Aunt Deejay, thank you. I love you."
"I'll see you in a bit." DJ replied, clicking off her phone. Next, she tried calling Kimmy, but Kimmy's phone rang continually before finally going to voicemail.
"Steph!" DJ yelled at her sister.
"Yeah?"
"Watch the boys, please. I've got to pick Ramona up from school."
"Okay." Stephanie replied. "Everything okay?" She questioned, hearing the concern in her sisters voice.
"Kimmy didn't pick Ramona up and she's not answering her phone." DJ replied.
"I'm sure it's nothing. She probably ran by the baby store and left her phone in her car. No big deal."
"She had an appointment today. You don't think that..." DJ trailed off.
"Everything has been normal so far..." Stephanie replied. "I'm sure it's fine."
DJ nodded, "Yeah. Watch the boys. I'll be right back."
As DJ drove down the street, she noticed the freeway seemed more congested than usual, despite the fact it was rush hour. Maybe she got stuck in traffic... DJ thought to herself. Maybe her phone wasn't charged and it died...
DJ arrived at the school and Ramona jumped in her car. "Thanks, Aunt Deejay."
"Hear anything from your mom, yet?" DJ questioned.
"Nothing..." Ramona replied.
"Well, the freeway has a lot of traffic. Maybe she got stuck in traffic, and forgot to charge her phone."
"Maybe." Ramona replied, "I just hope she's okay...the baby, too..."
DJ smiled. It had been a long 7 months as Ramona struggled with the idea that she would soon lose her status as only child. Slowly, with each passing day, Ramona was coming around to the idea of having a sibling. When she found out she would be joined by a sister, she was ecstatic.
DJ dropped Ramona off at their front door. She then rang Stephanie on her phone, "Steph? Do you think you can handle all of the kids for about an hour or so?"
"Sure Deej...what's up?"
"I'm going to look for Kimmy. I have a bad feeling. Please don't tell Ramona."
"A bad feeling about...?"
"I saw some traffic on the freeway when I was going to pick up Ramona. And when we were coming back...I saw an ambulance...I think there's been an accident. I just want to drive by. I'm sure Kimmy's fine...I just need to do this...for me."
"Sure Deej, you know, you take all the time you need. Let me know what happens, if you find her or find out anything..."
"I will." DJ replied. She clicked off her phone and headed towards the freeway on ramp.
