He was a strange boy. No one knew where he came from. All they knew was his name was Zak and he had a burn on the left side of his face. He was quiet and sullen and wore his black hair shaggy and uneven. The only colors he ever wore were black and red.

To all the other kids at Element High School, he was an outcast. Kind of emo, they thought, but the reason for that was Zak's messed up family. An abusive father, a runaway mother and a demon-like sister. The only one who treated Zak was his uncle.

Uncle Ike lived in China for a few years to study their language. When he came back to California, he spoke it like a native. Zak had lived with Ike for a year and a half now. He enjoyed living with him, and knew somehow that it was all too good to be true.
