"Sometimes love isn't what we think it is, Riku."

Not love? Was that her argument? That I didn't know if I loved her, that I wasn't sure of my emotions?

"That's bull, Kai."

"I'm sorry. But it's the truth."

I couldn't believe that she was doing this, here, now. "We'll never change, will we? We're always going to be fighting like this, aren't we?"

She began to nod. "I'm afraid so."

It was beautiful in the park this time of year. Everything was bright and all of the children were running around, laughing. It wasn't too hot, and it wasn't too cold. And it was here that she'd chosen to break my heart.

"I guess it doesn't matter then, does it?" Wind rustled our hair, forming curtains of silver and rose around us.

"What doesn't matter?"

I dug in my pocket and pulled out a little box. It was of crushed velvet, perfect to the touch. Kairi gasped silently and reached a hand towards it. She brushed my fingers and looked up into my eyes. The ones that I was pretending weren't about to leak.

"Take it, if you want it. Its not like I need it anymore."

"It would never have worked, Riku. We…we're just not cut out to be together. We're always fighting, and that's not something that a ring could change."

I nodded, chuckling. "We were close in high school—college is a different story, I suppose. I just thought—maybe, maybe it could work. I guess I'm just stupid."

"No. You're not stupid. You're—"

"In love? But, Kairi, I thought that sometimes love isn't what we think it is."

"Don't you dare turn my words around and spit them back at me."

I sighed. "Just…don't forget that somewhere out there, there's a man that loves you more than anything. Keep me close, okay?"

I walked out of the park, leaving my true love with a ring in her hand, which she was just as ready to throw away and leave as she was before I gave it to her.

There was love, the kind that blinds all other senses, makes the brain malfunction, the kind that makes everything else seem insignificant.

And then there was us.

So, apparently, I have this new thing for 'Riku being dumped by Kairi' fanfictions. Who woulda' guessed it? This is really short…but oh well.

A lot of the lines in this are from a song called 'There's Us' from the show Instant Star. I love that song!

I don't own Kingdom Hearts or some of the lines in this fanfiction.
