She called it 'The Itch', and that's exactly what it was.

When you're falling in love with someone.

It's under your skin, a constant trembling.

It's always there, at the most inconvenient of times.

It's insatiable, but it can be temporarily relieved. A touch or a glance.

Even another person – a kiss, a dance, anything to get your mind off him, for only a second.

Because he's always there. Always at the top of your mind. That smile, those eyes, his entire body.

But it was so much more than desires of the flesh – he was ever so caring with his baby sister, he was so loyal to his friends, and kind to his ex-girlfriends. His eyes held a special gleam when he smiled for true – she could always tell when he was really smiling, and when he wasn't.

Not only was it an itch, it was an itch she couldn't ever properly scratch. He was completely out of bounds – not only was he her best friend's ex, he was her step brother. They could never be together. Society would frown upon them, their parents would never speak to them, their siblings would never look at them, their friends would not understand them.

The Itch was insatiable – even with the cutest of boys, he was always at the top of her mind. Always. Forever dominating her thoughts.

She'd always imagined walking down the aisle in a beautiful dress, inside a huge church filled with people who loved her. She'd imagined standing next to the perfect man as the priest pronounced them man and wife.

But the man had always been faceless. He'd never been an actual person.

But he was there, too. In her daydreams. Her solace against him. She could not escape him even there.

He was the one standing there in the church, waiting for her at the alter, taking her hands, gazing into her eyes. He was the one that she dreamed held her into the cold nights. He was the one that chased her around the park in her dream summers.

It takes over your mind, your body, your spirit. It's always there. It can't be scratched. It's always there, it's insatiable.

It's The Itch.
