A/N: Okay, so I REAAALLLY wanted to bang out a chapter or of CTS over my four day weekend, but I was so...uninspired. But today I went with my family to my dad's friend's house. And guess what? I walk in and see a little eleven year old boy typing on a computer. After we'd been introduced and stuff, I asked what he was doing. His response? "...I was typing a story based off of Avatar the Last Airbender. Please don't call mea dork." New best friend. Needless to say, I needed to read it. And it was soooooooo good! So, I got reinspired on the ride home and wrote this oneshot out on my phone. I got the idea from Death Cab For Cutie's song "Passenger Seat". So yeah! Thats it! Tell me what you think.
Song- Hm...I would say....Passenger's Seat by Death Cab For Cutie. But I guess Party in the U.S.A by Miley Cyrus fits. She's so talented. Oh, Miley. (blatent use of sarcasm).
Disclaimer- I do not own Avatar or any of the other epic components in it. I also do not own Death Cab for Cutie's amazing music & lyrics (GOOD MOVIE.). I'm sorry to disappoint you all.
A Constant Thing
It had been a long time since I'd felt this free. My feet propped up on Appa's saddle, body laying face up towards the sky. The stars shining almost as bright as the eyes I loved so much. I pushed myself up, and looked out onto the great inhibited forests of the Earth kingdom. I inhaled the crisp night air, the scent of pine filling my nose. A calm passed over me.
I leapt onto Appa's head where Katara held the reins and pecked her cheek. Her skin heated quickly underneath my lips. How could I, the silly little boy in the iceberg, make someone like Katara blush? I laid down again and picked out stars, naming them for all our friends. Suddenly, a shooting star set the sky alight, filling the darkness with ice blue beams. I gasped, thinking of that time when we had to put out a fire because of a meteor touching ground. Katara gazed up towards it, following as it disintegrated into nothing. The sky went black, resuming its normal placid calm.
"Have you ever wondered if the stars collided or not?" I mused aloud.
Katara down at me and smiled. To anyone else, it would have just been a happy grin. To those who knew her better, like me, it was a mask. Her greatest defense to the outside world.
"It's so great of you, you know. Being home to comfort your dad on the...anniversary and all."
She scoffed lightly. "I just wish it didn't hurt me as much. Then I wouldn't mind."
"Your dad should be proud. You'd do anything for those you love even if it sacrifices your happiness."
"It's just in my nature Aang," she replied. "I always hope someone would return the favor if I needed it..." she trailed off, obviously feeling uncomfortable with how this conversation was turning out.
I sat up fast, all the blood rushing from my head. I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her into a potentially awkward one arm hug.
She saved the situation, thank the spirits, and rested her head on my shoulder.
"I will always be here. No matter how bad things get. Never forget that. I will always be here."
