Lisa sighed and pulled a book out of her bag. It was going to be a long afternoon.

Marge had talked her into tutoring Bart after school. His grades were slipping (from D to F) and she feared he might have to repeat fourth grade.

Lisa opened the book and knew from the look on her brother's face that this wasn't going to be worth the ten dollars she was getting paid.

"OK, Bart," she said. "Let's start with something easy. What's eight multiplied by eleven?"

He looked at her with a blank look on his face. How was he meant to know? "A Math problem?"

"No, Bart," she groaned. "What do you get when you multiply eight by eleven?"

"A headache."

"Oh for the love of…" she trailed off. "It's eighty-eight!"

Bart shrugged. It was embarrassing being tutored by his little sister. "Whatever, next question please."

Lisa shut the book and got out one she was reading. "Why don't we try some written equations?" she asked, not caring what his response was. "On a restaurant menu there are found appetisers, five main courses and three deserts. How many different dinners can be ordered if each dinner consist of one appetiser, one main course and one dessert?"

"What about drinks? Did anyone think of that?" he asked. "And who only has one dessert?"

"I only have one dessert. Let's try again. Anna bought five apples at the grocery store. She paid with a ten-dollar bill and received four quarters in change. Anna then realised that she'd received too much change, so gave back one of the quarters. How much did the apples cost?"

"What kind of weirdo would give the change back? And that's what they have debit cards for, Lisa."

Lisa slammed the book shut and threw it at him. If he wanted to fail fourth grade, then so be it. She'd had enough and went to talk to her mom about summer school.
