Aftermath
Once again, Martha dreampt about "The Year That Never Was". Once again, she woke up screaming. Once again, she woke to find herself being held by the Doctor. And once again, she was glad she had changed her decision to leave him, and decided and stayed with him. Just being around him was worth having a broken heart.
The dreams weren't always the same, but they shared a common theme. "The Master" and his minions had found her loved ones, and she was powerless to help them as they were tortured and killed. The dreams weren't plaguing her every night, but they were common enough that she dreaded falling asleep.
This last time the dream had been about her sister, Tish. In this dream, Tish had been tortured by The Master for hours because they believed that she might know something about how they might find Martha, so they could stop her mission to save both her family and the world. Tish was killed when she resisted. As Martha had watched, her sister, her lovely sister, the only one who had understood how she had felt for the Doctor and supported her, was forced to undergo unspeakable horrors because of Martha. In her dream, she had looked into the Master's eyes as he had mercilessly ordered Tish killed by his minions, and she had seen only evil.
As Martha lay in his arms sobbing, exhausted by the emotions she had experienced in her dream. The Doctor rubbed her back and said knew there was nothing he could say to make it better. Nothing he could do to make what she had gone through because of him go away. He could do nothing but hold her and offer his strength whenever she screamed in anguish.
Eventually, lying in the Doctors arms, listening to his two heartbeats, Martha had finally fallen back to sleep. Maybe tonight she would able to sleep knowing he was there for her, knowing in her heart that he would never leave her.
