Coupled

She runs to me with pain in her eyes, her face contorting with different emotions.
"It's Hunter," she tries to say between breaths.
Instantly I shot off of the porch and followed her around the back of the house. My son was laying underneath his swing set, blood pouring from his nose.
He wasn't moving.
I felt sick. So many reasons as to why he wasn't moving flashed through my mind. I tried not to think of the worst scenarios. I ran past Bella and collapsed next to him, checking for signs of a heartbeat. I felt his little breath fan over my face that I laid onto his chest and let out my own held breath. I looked at Bella to tell her to dial 911 but realized she must have already as I heard the sirens in the distance.
We rode in the back of the ambulance, sitting on opposite sides of him, her gripping his hand as tightly as I was. I watched her face fill with worry around the paramedics and was in awe at how much she truly worried for my son. I mean, I knew she cared. She had been babysitting him since my ex wife left me when he was five months old. Her being an old friend, I trusted completely. But this look was complete maternal love. Like her existence depended on his health and survival.
It was painstakingly beautiful.
The doors to the van flew open to the doors to the hospital, snapping me out of my thoughts. Then we walked into the chaos together.

Three days later Bella and I were sitting on my porch, my son nestled safely in his bed upstairs.
In the past few days she never left his side, never went home. She had her father bring her clothes and toiletries. She didn't ever leave to go to the cafeteria to eat. Instead, after the first day of her eating nothing, I brought food up to her.
On the third day, before his release from being watched for a mild concussion, I came up to the room to bring her food and found her sleeping in a chair next to his bed. Her body was slumped forward, her hand clasped tightly around his.
I stood motionless staring at them, a warm feeling spreading through my body and a smile on my lips. Her beauty struck me again. I had to fight the urge to nestled in between them, worried about the demanding pull to be the one her hands clung unto instead and amazed at how well she took control of everything.
I looked over at her sitting on my porch beside me. She smiled and timidly placed her head on my shoulder. Determined to go with what I felt, I placed my arm around her and she snuggled in closer.
We shared a sigh as we watched the sun set. Her little hands clinging onto mine in my lap.
