Arthur Kirkland stared blankly at his blazingly white computer screen, eyes pulsing their general displeasure in short waves of easily ignored pain. The cursor blinked at him from the empty word processor. A gentle breeze filtered through the room, picking up the corners of loose papers full of mythical tales and poems and tea stains the sullied the black type and warped the otherwise neat expanses of words. The blond took a sip of cold tea that, on second thought was not actually tea from that day at all and probably shouldn't have been consumed after the amount of time it had sat out. Thick brows furrowed in concern, but a small voice from somewhere told him that it was just tea and thus there was no real harm in gulping it down.

After deciding not to trust that particular voice, Arthur set the tempting cup down farther away and rubbed his sore eyes. Clearly his mind was acting up again from lack of sleep or drink or something and the first thing he should have been doing was going straight to bed. The computer went into screen saver mode, prompting the man to cease his late night musings and return to his slightly less than comfortable bed. He had been living alone for years, never being interested enough in anybody to form a relationship beyond "yes I would like sugar and cream in my tea here's five dollars, thank you and goodbye." He missed the ever busy halls of his college dormitory, if only because people used to check on him if he went missing for days at a time. Now the only person who bothered to make sure that he had a pulse was his editor, and she only saw him every few months due to their weird schedules. Arthur sighed, shrugging out of his button down and ignoring another voice that told him he ought to hide in the woods. It was late, he was tired, and there was no one in the house but himself.

Maybe the reason that he was having so much trouble writing was because of his loneliness. He scoffed at the idea, and tucked himself into bed. Surely his voices and tea and books were company enough to keep him from doing anything too stupid. at least, that was what he hoped.
