"You ok?" Booth asked as he glanced at Bones. She nodded but he could see the tears starting to form in her eyes. "It's no one's fault, you know. No one could have prevented it."
"I just..." Bones let out a small sob and pressed her palms to her face.
Checking the traffic behind him, Booth pulled the car to the side of the road. He unbuckled his seat belt and leaned towards his partner. "Hey, come here." Bones fell into his hug, her tears becoming more prominent. "We'll figure this out, ok? I promise." Bones mumbled something into his jacket. "What?"
She leaned back, wiping her eyes. "I said, I was responsible for him. I should have protected him."
"Bones,"
She shook her head. "He, he's the closest thing I will ever have to a son." Hearing her words Booth felt his heart break. Bones eyes fell to her lap. "I love him. He's my son and I love him."
"I know Bones."
"And I couldn't protect him." She whispered and leaned back towards Booth. "Why couldn't I protect him?" With no answer, Booth simply stroked her hair and let her cry.
I just something that popped into my head as I watched the episode.
