At Worlds End

The Last Journey of Reepicheep

ONE

"Where sky and water meet, where waves grow sweet, doubt not Reepicheep, doubt not Reepicheep, there is the utter East," said Reepicheep. Over and over again. It had been hours since he had left there majesties standing in the water growing smaller, and smaller.

On and on he rowed. When he tired, all he need do was dip his paw in the cold water. The water - that - was - like - light would flow through him, giving his body energy enough to go on for a few more miles. As far as he could seen, the bright lilies were everywhere. In all directions there was nothing but thier fragrant perfume. A light breeze brought with it the scent of lilies, and something else too. A whisper.

"Further up. Further in." all of a sudden Reepicheep was aware that there was a patch of green, and it was growing fast. It was only a matter of minutes before the boat scraped ground, and jolted to a sudden stop. One that sent poor Reepicheep flying into space. He landed on some kind of springy ground, and bounced for a few feet, then lay still on his back, looking up at the sky until a shadow blocked it out.

"Come," said a rich, deep voice. "Further up, and further in."

Startled, Reepicheep jumped to his feet, and while turning drew his sword.

"Reepicheep, you little warrior. Put up your sword. Come with me."

Either because the white brilliance of the lilies had blinded him, or that he was dreaming, Reepicheep did not know. So he asked,

"Aslan?"

"Yes Reepicheep. It is I. Now come, you have wasted enough time already with your questions, and doubts."

Reepicheep followed, dazed, and when he looked behind towards the direction of the water, he saw that it was far away, as if he had been journying for miles, instead of only a few steps. Looking down, he saw the grass roll by under his feet as though he were flying on a wind. He saw then, that he was not walking, but running. On and on he ran - faster and faster.
